

Cadillac has officially christened its first-ever Formula 1 machine the MAC-26—Mario Andretti Cadillac 26—marking a poignant tribute to one of motorsport's greatest icons as the American manufacturer prepares for its competitive debut at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix on March 8, 2026. The designation honors the 1978 World Champion, whose pioneering spirit and competitive excellence have become the philosophical foundation of the team's ambitious entry into the sport's premier championship.
Mario Andretti remains the only driver to achieve the "Triple Crown" of motorsport, winning the F1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500, and the Daytona 500, alongside four IndyCar titles and multiple sportscar victories. His influence on Cadillac's F1 project extends far beyond ceremonial acknowledgment. Though the 85-year-old now operates in a consultancy capacity under majority owner TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss and team principal Graeme Lowdon, Andretti's competitive philosophy permeates the organization.
Lowdon has repeatedly referenced one of Andretti's most famous maxims: "If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough." This ethos captures the frenetic pace at which Cadillac has assembled its operation across two continents, meeting every developmental deadline and participating in all winter testing programs despite being the sport's first start-up team in a decade.
The MAC-26 itself embodies the revolutionary 2026 technical regulations that have fundamentally reshaped F1 engineering. The car features a 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged Ferrari engine producing over 1,000 bhp, coupled with an innovative hybrid system emphasizing electrical power. The MGU-K now generates 350kW—a nearly 300% increase from previous specifications—creating an approximate 50:50 power split between internal combustion and electric motors. The chassis weighs 768kg, 30kg lighter than 2025 specifications, with a shortened 3,400mm wheelbase and active aerodynamics replacing traditional DRS technology.
Drivers Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas accumulated 3,935 combined kilometres during winter testing, completing Cadillac's methodical preparation despite predictable teething problems. The team has set realistic inaugural objectives, expecting to compete against Aston Martin for grid positioning rather than immediate front-running performance.
