David Coulthard believes George Russell must begin to destabilise Kimi Antonelli’s growing confidence if he is to mount a serious challenge for his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship.
Russell entered the 2026 season tipped as a favourite for the title. However, a strong opening sequence from his Mercedes team-mate — including two grand prix victories in the first three rounds — has shifted the early narrative.
Antonelli’s triumph at the Japanese Grand Prix made him the youngest championship leader in the history of the series, and he now holds a nine-point advantage over Russell.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard suggested that Russell is beginning to recognise the significance of this moment in his career.
"I think George is realising this is his opportunity and any advantage that they've had in those early races will slowly be eroded as their customer teams understand how to use their energy as Kimi grows in confidence," Coulthard said.
For the former driver, the psychological dynamic between team-mates is central to any title fight. A confident rival inside the same garage is rarely desirable.
"You don't want a really confident team-mate. You want a team-mate that's slightly thinking, 'Oh, I'm not sure I can beat him in qualifying.' Trust me, I know because I had team-mates where I would sit there looking at the lap time in qualifying thinking, 'I've got one more set of tyres. I don't think I can go any faster.'"
Coulthard’s assessment was blunt: Russell must now act decisively.
"So, George has to now start eroding that confidence within Kimi. And he's having to do that whilst of course, [keeping] the facade of the team. Mercedes, you know, we love each other, everyone's fine, but it will come to a head."
He added: "And as far as I'm concerned for George, he's got to get his shoulders behind that and get his elbows out sooner rather than later because Kimi is growing in confidence right now."
The championship now pauses for five weeks ahead of the Miami Grand Prix on 1–3 May, following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
The unexpected gap in the calendar may offer Mercedes’ rivals an opportunity to regroup and accelerate development. That prospect only increases the weight on Russell’s shoulders as he seeks to halt Antonelli’s surge and reassert himself in the title fight.
With momentum currently leaning towards the younger driver, the intra-team balance at Mercedes is becoming one of the defining themes of the season.
