The 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship has taken an extraordinary step by becoming the first major racing series to postpone an event due to military escalation in the Middle East. The Qatar 1812km, originally scheduled for March 26-28 at the Lusail International Circuit, has been indefinitely postponed to later in the season following days of intense geopolitical conflict in the Gulf region.
The decision came swiftly on Tuesday afternoon as the FIA prioritized competitor and spectator safety above all else. As the series' statement emphasized, "With the safety and security of competitors, personnel and fans of the utmost importance, the decision has been taken to delay the event that had been due to take place on 26-28 March."
The postponement stems from escalating military tensions following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior regime officials. In response, Iran launched drone and missile strikes across the Gulf region, targeting not only military installations but also civilian infrastructure including hotels and airports.
The severity of the situation became undeniable when U.S. President Donald Trump predicted on March 1st that intensive combat operations could persist for at least another four weeks, dramatically elevating security concerns throughout the region. This assessment left no room for the FIA to proceed with hosting an international motorsport event involving thousands of competitors, crew members, and spectators.
The decision's timing proved critical due to logistical constraints. The WEC Prologue—essential pre-season testing at Lusail—was originally scheduled for March 22-23, merely three days before the season opener. This compressed timeline necessitated an early decision to allow proper rescheduling of logistics, transport, and personnel arrangements.
The championship will now commence at the Imola 6 Hours on April 19, 2026. This represents a significant shift for a season that was meticulously planned around a Middle Eastern launch. The iconic Italian circuit will host the first round of an eight-round season, marking an unusual opening for the WEC's calendar.

The FIA has committed to rescheduling the Qatar 1812km for the second half of 2026, ensuring this prestigious event retains its place in the championship. FIA WEC CEO Frédéric Lequien stated the series would "work closely with all involved to reschedule the race for later in the 2026 season," with specific dates to be finalized in due course.
The Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation and Lusail International Circuit management have supported the decision, releasing a joint statement affirming their commitment to finding an optimal alternative date.
While the WEC has taken decisive action, Formula 1 remains in a state of assessment regarding its April Middle East races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The FIA continues actively monitoring regional developments, signaling that further postponements across multiple series remain possible if security conditions deteriorate further.
This unprecedented situation underscores the inherent challenges of hosting international motorsport events in geopolitically volatile regions, even as the sport seeks to expand its global footprint.
