Franco Colapinto has been demoted from eighth to 10th in the Barcelona Grand Prix classification after receiving a 10-second time penalty for a yellow-flag infringement.
The Alpine driver had crossed the line eighth, directly behind team-mate Pierre Gasly, on a race day that initially looked like a meaningful recovery for the Enstone squad after a difficult weekend for pace. Instead, the post-race stewardsâ decision has cut into that result and moved Colapinto behind the Racing Bulls pair of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

The incident came on lap 40, when Fernando Alonso stopped his Aston Martin at Turn 9 with a suspected battery issue. The situation began under local yellow flags before becoming a virtual safety car period.
Colapinto was called before the FIA race stewards after the race as they reviewed whether he had reduced speed sufficiently through the affected sector. Their conclusion was that although he did react, the response was not strong enough to satisfy the requirements under yellow-flag conditions.

The stewardsâ statement read: âThe stewards determine that the driver of Car 43 slightly reduced speed before entering the single yellow flag zone, but did not discernibly reduce speed in the relevant yellow flag sector. The stewards acknowledge that the driver reacted to the yellow flag but do not consider the reaction to be sufficient to comply with the regulations. Therefore, a penalty on the lower end of the applicable scale of penalties is imposed.â
Colapinto was also given one penalty point on his super licence, taking his total to two across the past 12 months.
Before the penalty was applied, the result had appeared to underline a stronger Sunday for Alpine. Gasly and Colapinto had both finished inside the top eight on the road, a notable turnaround after the team had struggled for performance earlier in the weekend.

Speaking before learning of the sanction, Colapinto was upbeat about Alpineâs race execution and the carâs behaviour over a longer stint. He said: âItâs been a very good race, very solid. As a team we showed that we were really strong and that we turned around a tricky result. I think positive as a whole, itâs been a much stronger race day.â
He added: âWith a full tank we showed that we were better. We keep working and keep trying to get better for the next few races, seeing that the car is not feeling good and we have a lot of things to improve and to understand.â
The penalty does not erase Alpineâs improved race-day performance, but it does turn a valuable eighth place into 10th â a costly reminder that under yellow flags, marginal compliance is rarely enough.
