Freddie Slater has put himself at the front of the FIA Formula 3 conversation at Spa-Francorchamps after topping Free Practice for TRIDENT with a 2:06.311. The Britonâs early pace was a clear positive, but the session also exposed the traffic and tyre-management challenges likely to define qualifying.
Slater described the opening run as particularly strong, crediting his team for giving him a competitive car immediately. âIt felt really positive for me,â he said. âThe team gave me a great car straight away, the first lap was really strong and then towards the end it got a little bit chaotic with all the fighting for track position.â

He added that he was able to reach the limit quickly and deliver on his first laps, leaving him confident that the team can build on the practice performance. The result continues a strong season for the Audi Development Driver, who is still searching for his first FIA Formula 3 victory but has regularly featured on the podium.

The late stages of practice became increasingly difficult as the tyres lost their best grip and drivers fought for clean track position. Slater expects qualifying to demand discipline rather than rushed decisions, with fuel levels creating a significant difference between the first and second runs.
âYou can't really just go on the first run and expect it to be the lap,â he explained. âOf course, you need to just maximise every lap possible and see where you end up.â
Traffic management will be another major variable. With 30 cars on track and every driver attempting to avoid leading a group, Slater found himself surrounded by cars as the session developed. He ultimately waited for the right moment, allowing several rivals to pass before completing his final run.
The tyres, however, were already past their best, preventing another improvement. For Slater, the lesson was straightforward: âIf you make a panic decision, then that's when it goes wrong, so I think patience is going to be the key.â

Slater is aiming for pole after his strongest possible start, while recognising that Spa can produce opportunities from any qualifying position. Slipstreaming, the circuitâs chaotic nature and a new DRS zone should keep the racing open.
âOf course pole is very important, but for me, you can race from anywhere here,â Slater said. The immediate objective is therefore clear: reproduce the pace, avoid the traffic traps and convert practice confidence into a qualifying lap.
