Kimi Antonelli has called on Mercedes to address the reliability problems that damaged his Formula 1 title challenge at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, after a late issue forced his W17 to grind to a halt in the closing stages.
The setback proved especially costly because Lewis Hamilton, Antonelliâs nearest rival in the standings, won the race and reduced the Italianâs championship advantage to 41 points. In a title fight now shaped by fine margins, the Barcelona retirement was more than a bad result; it was a warning that Mercedes cannot afford repeated failures while Ferrari continues to apply pressure.

Antonelliâs stoppage also carried an uncomfortable echo of George Russellâs problem in Canada, where his Mercedes team-mate stopped on track during the race. That pattern has sharpened the focus on a weakness the championship leader believes must be dealt with quickly.
âOf course, itâs very disappointing, but these things happen,â Antonelli told media, including Motorsport Week. âIt happened to George in Canada; it happened to me this time. Itâs definitely something we need to work on as a team, because itâs important points that we lost.â

Antonelli was careful not to turn the issue into a broad criticism of Mercedesâ performance package. He praised the strength of the power unit and acknowledged the difficulties that can come with a first year of regulation, but he made clear that reliability is not yet where it needs to be.
âThese things can happen, especially in the first year of regulation. Itâs not always easy to find the perfect reliability,â he said. âI think our PU is incredibly strong, but for sure, reliability is not the best bit. But as I said, these things can happen; itâs no oneâs fault. Now, a week of rest and then weâre back in Austria.â
Mercedes is expected to bring new parts to Austria, with Antonelli insisting the team remains on a strong development run despite Barcelona feeling like âa little bit of a bump on the road.â The next race now becomes an immediate test of response, particularly with Hamiltonâs form becoming harder to ignore. Antonelli admitted Ferrari is in âincredible formâ and highlighted both its speed and reliability. That combination is precisely what Mercedes must match if Antonelli is to protect his championship lead.
âWe just need to maximise every opportunity that we have,â Antonelli said. âItâs not going to be straightforward, but Iâm already looking forward to the next one because I really want to go back to where we left.â
With the season approaching its halfway point, Antonelli still holds the momentum on paper. But reliability is now the variable Mercedes must eliminate before it becomes the defining weakness of his title bid.
