The landscape of German motorsport is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by an unexpected catalyst: Max Verstappen. While the nation has grappled with a decline in audience interest since the retirement of Michael Schumacher, the reigning Formula 1 champion’s recent forays into GT3 racing are being hailed as a "giant step forward" for the sport’s visibility in the region.
Following the departure of the German Grand Prix from the Formula 1 calendar after 2019—with the exception of a one-off event at the Nürburgring in 2020—the local appetite for top-tier racing has faced persistent challenges. Thomas Voss, the boss of the DTM series, believes that Verstappen’s involvement has acted as a powerful bridge, helping fans rediscover the appeal of domestic and GT-based competition.
“Overall, Verstappen has opened many people's eyes to the whole GT sport and thus also to the DTM, that there is something else besides Formula 1, with which you can drive interesting races—great cars that also look similar to the road car,” Voss explained in an interview with F1 Insider.

The decline in interest has been compounded by the rising costs of grassroots motorsport, which has made it increasingly difficult to attract the next generation of talent. Voss notes that the current era stands in stark contrast to the height of the Schumacher years, when the sport was flooded with young enthusiasts.
By leveraging his status as a "megastar," Verstappen has brought a renewed spotlight to the GT3 and DTM platforms. For fans who find the cost of attending Formula 1 Grands Prix prohibitive, these series offer a compelling, accessible alternative.
“That's why it was extremely important that such a driver took such a step, also for the DTM. For the whole GT sport, it's good that people woke up and realised: There is also something else outside of Formula 1,” Voss added. “This is a giant step for all motorsport. Such public attention, which you then get through such a megastar, is good for the whole sport.”
As the sport looks to cultivate a new generation of fans, the influence of high-profile drivers stepping outside the F1 bubble may prove to be a vital component in revitalizing the German motorsport scene.
