Oscar Piastri is reportedly considering terminating his McLaren contract, a move that could trigger one of the most dramatic driver-market reshuffles in Formula 1 and potentially open the door for Max Verstappen to move to Woking.
The Australian, contracted to McLaren until 2028, has been linked with a departure since the end of the 2025 season. That campaign ended with Piastri finishing third in the championship, behind teammate Lando Norris, after losing out amid tensions around McLaren’s team orders and the so-called ‘papaya rules’.

According to the report, Piastri’s camp felt he had been treated unfairly, with the situation straining the relationship between his manager, Mark Webber, and McLaren’s leadership. That friction now appears central to the uncertainty around his future.
The key detail is Piastri’s reported release clause. The 24-year-old can allegedly activate an exit option if he is outside the top five in the standings this summer. After the British GP, he sits sixth, placing his contractual position under sharp focus.

Grande Premio claims Piastri is considering ‘activating his release clause and terminating his contract’ in 2026. The report adds that the fallout from the 2025 season destabilised his relationship with McLaren and exposed internal tension between Webber and the team.

That would create an extraordinary opening. Verstappen has also been linked with McLaren while assessing his own position at Red Bull and in Formula 1 more broadly. His recent frustration has only intensified after Silverstone, where he retired following another rear wing failure. For more on that situation, read our report on how Red Bull vowed a full review after Verstappen’s Silverstone wing failure.
Like Piastri, Verstappen is said to have a route out of his current contract in 2026. The source states he can leave Red Bull if he is outside the top two by the summer break, a condition that can now be activated because he cannot mathematically catch George Russell, currently second, by that point.
If both drivers moved, the most obvious outcome would be a direct swap: Verstappen joining McLaren, with Gianpiero Lambiase following from Red Bull the next year, and Piastri heading to Milton Keynes.
Red Bull has reportedly viewed Piastri as an ideal Verstappen replacement for some time. However, it is not the only possible destination, with Webber also said to have spoken to Audi about a potential deal. For now, Piastri’s decision sits at the centre of a market that could reshape the competitive order.
