Two weeks after the Monaco and Barcelona double-header, Formula 1’s European run continues at the Red Bull Ring with the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The Spielberg weekend begins with Free Practice 1 and 2 on Friday, June 26, followed by Free Practice 3 and Qualifying on Saturday, June 27, before the Grand Prix on Sunday, June 28.

Austria remains one of the calendar’s most compact and intense venues. The 4.326km layout features just 10 corners — the fewest of any circuit on the schedule — yet its elevation, kerbs and heavy braking zones make it far less straightforward than the lap count suggests. The run from pole to the Turn 1 braking point is 243 metres, while the pit stop time loss is listed at 20.02 seconds, including a 2.5-second stop.
The first Austrian Grand Prix was held in 1964 at Zeltweg, while Oscar Piastri holds the current lap record with a 1m 07.924s for McLaren in 2025. Max Verstappen leads the venue’s modern headline statistics with four pole positions and four wins.
The 2025 race produced 81 overtakes, underlining how Turns 3 and 4 can generate action despite the short lap. Based on the previous 10 races in Austria, the Safety Car probability stands at 50%, with the Virtual Safety Car probability at 40%.
Former Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer describes Austria as picturesque, undulating and characterful, but warns that the kerbs can punish imprecision. “Turn 4, a downhill braking zone, is the easiest one to mess up – so many drivers end up in the gravel there on the exit,” Palmer said. He also noted the relentless rhythm of the lap, adding that drivers barely get a breath through the Grand Prix.

Pirelli will bring the softest compounds — C3, C4 and C5 — to Spielberg. Wear is not expected to be decisive, with degradation mainly thermal. The rough asphalt, traction zones and downhill braking demands place stress on both rear tyres and the front axle, while the circuit’s altitude may reduce downforce and increase tyre slip. For more on the compound selection, read the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix Pirelli preview.
Most teams used two stops last year, but Pirelli expects the current tyres’ greater consistency could push the race closer to a one-stop trend. Temperatures may also become a factor, with the Styrian setting capable of sudden weather changes.

Barcelona reshaped the championship picture. Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari victory made him the first non-Mercedes winner of 2026 and cut Kimi Antonelli’s lead from 66 points to 41 after Antonelli retired. Toto Wolff said he “absolutely” views Hamilton as a title threat, while Mercedes will want a clean response at a circuit George Russell won at two years ago.
McLaren arrive third in the Teams’ Championship after Lando Norris’ Barcelona podium, while Red Bull seek recovery at home after Laurent Mekies called the previous race a “reality check”. Behind them, Alpine lead the midfield in fifth, ahead of Racing Bulls, Haas, Williams, Audi, Aston Martin and Cadillac.
