Formula E has confirmed a major sporting regulation overhaul for the 2026-27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, introducing a new race-weekend structure built around the incoming GEN4 car.
The changes represent one of the championshipâs most substantial format shifts, particularly for double-header events. From next season, those weekends will be split between the traditional E-Prix and a new sprint-style contest called E-Prix Unleashed, a format designed to showcase the maximum performance of Formula Eâs next-generation machinery.

Under the revised structure, the classic E-Prix will remain a 45-minute race with strategic depth at its core. It will use a low-downforce aerodynamic configuration, an extended 8-minute ATTACK MODE and a mandatory PIT BOOST, keeping energy management, racecraft and tactical execution central to the championshipâs identity.
By contrast, E-Prix Unleashed will be a 30-minute sprint with a high-downforce aero package, a shorter 6-minute ATTACK MODE and no PIT BOOST. The intention is clear: reduce strategic interruption and allow the GEN4 car to operate closer to its full performance ceiling.
The move follows Formula Eâs wider GEN4 rollout, with the championship also confirming an expanded calendar framework. For more on that wider schedule shift, read our report on Formula Eâs record 2026-27 Gen4 calendar.
The regulatory change is anchored in the arrival of the GEN4 car, described by the championship as its most powerful, advanced and sustainable machine to date. The car will produce 600 kW, equivalent to more than 815 horsepower, and will feature active all-wheel drive, an active differential, dual aerodynamic configurations and next-generation regenerative braking.

Formula E says the package has been engineered for closer racing, greater overtaking potential and a higher demand on driver skill. Sustainability also remains central: every GEN4 component is built from recyclable or reusable materials, using ethically sourced elements and a circular-design philosophy.
A refreshed manufacturer field will accompany the new era, with Opel joining Jaguar, Nissan, Citroën, Lola Cars, Mahindra and Porsche. All will use the GEN4 platform to advance high-performance electric-vehicle development.

Alberto Longo, Formula E Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer, called the upcoming season the championshipâs biggest and most ambitious calendar to date, highlighting 21 races across 13 cities and venues including COTA, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch.
âThe tracks are faster, the competition is fiercer, and we cannot wait to get this historic season underway,â Longo said.
FIA Circuit Sport Department Director Marek Nawarecki said the sporting regulations had been adapted in partnership with Formula E and competitors to highlight GEN4âs performance.
âWe have adapted these regulations to match and highlight the incredible performance of the GEN4, and we believe the result will achieve exactly that,â he said.
