Aston Martin have identified Sergio Perez as a potential replacement for Fernando Alonso as uncertainty grows around the Spaniard’s future beyond 2026. The Silverstone-based team are understood to be acting proactively after links emerged suggesting Alpine could try to lure Alonso back to Enstone for 2027.
Alonso is out of contract with Aston Martin at the end of 2026, and the team’s difficult campaign with the AMR26 has sharpened questions over whether he will remain. The source of tension is clear: Aston Martin’s competitiveness has fallen short, and Alonso is believed to be deeply frustrated behind the scenes, even if he has not yet shown the full extent of that anger publicly.

That situation has not gone unnoticed at Alpine, where Flavio Briatore is said to be monitoring developments closely. The speculation has grown enough in recent weeks for Aston Martin to begin assessing what a post-Alonso driver line-up could look like, an angle that follows wider paddock intrigue around Briatore, Alonso and possible 2027 moves.
According to RacingNews365, Aston Martin believe Perez could be a viable candidate if Alonso leaves. The Mexican’s performances at Cadillac, particularly his reported dominance over Valtteri Bottas in their head-to-head battle this season, have placed him on the radar of multiple teams.

For Aston Martin, Perez offers several qualities that fit the brief. The team are aware their current form is unlikely to attract a front-running driver for 2027, but Perez remains a six-time Grand Prix winner with a strong profile and a reputation for helping develop a car. His current position near the rear of the field with Cadillac has not weakened that appeal.
Aston Martin technical director Adrian Newey is also described as a major admirer of Perez, valuing his technical acumen and expertise from their time together at Red Bull. Even the substantial salary Perez would likely require to leave Cadillac is not thought to be a deterrent.
Aston Martin are not alone. Williams could also move for Perez if either Alex Albon or Carlos Sainz exits, with both drivers believed to be open to better opportunities after a tough 2026. That aligns with the wider uncertainty around Grove, despite public confidence in the team’s current pairing, as explored in Williams’ stance on Albon and Sainz’s future.
If Alonso stays at Aston Martin, Alpine could join Williams in pursuing Perez. His sponsor appeal is viewed as significant, particularly in relation to Alpine’s e-commerce partner and as a possible alternative to Alonso ahead of Gucci’s title partnership.
Perez remains committed to Cadillac for now, but the 2027 market is clearly tightening. Alonso, Perez, Albon and Sainz may all become part of a wider domino effect, with Max Verstappen’s future still viewed as a major trigger point across the grid.
