Van Amersfoort Racing made a dominant statement at Albert Park with Bruno Del Pino's maiden FIA Formula 3 victory in Saturday's Sprint Race, with teammate Enzo Deligny completing a commanding team 1-2. The result was marred by a late collision between PREMA Racing teammates James Wharton and Louis Sharp, which triggered a red flag and forced early race termination.
Del Pino, who started from pole position, controlled proceedings from lights-to-flag with clinical precision. The VAR driver built a commanding 1.3-second advantage over Deligny by lap six, establishing himself as the clear leader while his teammate held off pressure from Rodin Motorsport's Brando Badoer and TRIDENT's Noah Strømsted. The top four created a formidable buffer, sitting over two seconds clear of ART Grand Prix's Taito Kato in fifth.
The race's narrative shifted dramatically on lap eight when Wharton and Sharp made contact at Turn 6 while battling wheel-to-wheel through the opening sector. The collision sent both PREMA machines into the barriers, necessitating immediate red flags and safety measures. With barrier repairs required and the track needing clearance, race control made the decision not to resume racing. Given that more than 25% of laps had been completed, only the top five classified finishers were awarded championship points.
"Grabbed a victory from pole position, so of course no better result than this. Super happy for the team, just a bit of a sour feeling with the points sharing, but hopefully the other drivers are okay and lets continue on to tomorrow," Del Pino reflected post-race, capturing the bittersweet nature of the abbreviated encounter.
Badoer's third-place finish proved particularly significant, marking the Rodin Motorsport driver's maiden podium in the category. Behind Strømsted in fourth, Kato rounded out the point-scoring positions with a fifth-place result on his ART Grand Prix debut.
The abbreviated sprint has left the championship landscape wide open ahead of Sunday's Feature Race. Del Pino leads the standings with five points, with Deligny close behind on four. Badoer's maiden podium elevated him to third on three points, while Strømsted and Kato round out the early leaders.
In the Teams' Championship, Van Amersfoort Racing has seized control with nine points, establishing themselves as the early pace-setters. Rodin Motorsport's three-point haul places them second, with TRIDENT and ART Grand Prix beginning their championship campaigns in third and fourth respectively.
The drivers will look to redeem themselves in Sunday's Feature Race at 08:50 local time, where the full grid will have the opportunity to contest a complete race distance at the iconic Albert Park Circuit.
