Kush Maini handed five-place grid drop after F2 Madrid Sprint collision
Kush Maini has been handed a five-place grid drop following the conclusion of Saturday’s FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race in Madrid, after the ART Grand Prix driver was found wholly responsible for a collision with Nico Varrone.
The incident occurred at Turn 8, where Maini made contact with Varrone’s Van Amersfoort Racing car during the Sprint. The stewards reviewed the circumstances after the race, hearing from both drivers and representatives of their respective teams before reaching their decision.
Their investigation included video evidence, onboard footage and GPS data. On that basis, the stewards determined that Car 16 was wholly to blame for the collision.
Sporting penalty changes Feature Race start
Maini was initially awarded a 10-second time penalty. However, that sanction has been converted into a grid penalty under Article 39.3(b) of the FIA Formula 2 Sporting Regulations.
The conversion results in a five-position drop on the starting grid for Sunday’s Feature Race. Maini will therefore start from the back of the field, turning a post-Sprint penalty into a significant setback for ART Grand Prix.
The decision follows a busy Formula 2 weekend in Madrid, where the Sprint formed the first competitive test before the Feature Race. Ritomo Miyata’s Formula 2 Sprint victory in Madrid provided the wider context for Saturday’s action, while Maini’s penalty now adds another key factor to the Feature Race grid.
A difficult recovery task
Starting from the rear leaves Maini with ground to recover from the opening lap onwards. The penalty does not alter the Sprint result itself, but it directly affects his position for the weekend’s longer race.
For ART Grand Prix, the priority will now be to maximise Maini’s opportunity from the back of the grid. The stewards’ ruling is clear: after reviewing the available evidence, responsibility for the Turn 8 contact was assigned entirely to Car 16, with the resulting five-place drop deciding Maini’s Feature Race starting position.
