The departure of Gianpiero Lambiase from Red Bull Racing to join McLaren as chief racing officer by 2028 has sent shockwaves through the paddock, casting a long shadow over the future of four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
The impending split of one of the sport’s most iconic driver-engineer pairings has prompted former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard to weigh in on the profound significance of this professional bond.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard emphasized that a race engineer’s role extends far beyond the technical mastery of vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, and car setup.
"A race engineer is not only someone that understands vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, aero models, and all of the other good things that you need to deal with when they're setting up a race car, but they're also part psychologist," Coulthard explained.
He noted that the high-pressure environment of a Formula 1 season requires a delicate balance of emotional management. "Over the course of a season, a driver will have weekends when he's feeling on a high, other weekends when he's feeling on a low, just a natural ebb and flow of life. They've got to be able to know when to give them a kick and when to give them a tickle and everything in between."

For Coulthard, the success of the partnership is rooted in something deeper than data. "The importance of the relationship is absolutely clear. It's more than a professional relationship. There's got to be absolute trust. The driver has to believe 100% his race engineer is doing everything he can to fight his corner."
This sentiment resonates with the current uncertainty surrounding Verstappen’s future at Red Bull. The Dutchman has previously stated he would be reluctant to work with any other engineer, highlighting the unique synergy he shares with Lambiase.
Despite the potential disruption, Verstappen has publicly supported his long-time collaborator’s career move. Speaking at a Viaplay event, the champion revealed he had discussed the transition with Lambiase.
"We’ve spoken about it, and when he told me what the opportunity was, I said: you’d be stupid not to take it," Verstappen said. "It’s an incredible opportunity for him, not just in terms of the role but also for his future. You have to think about your family and long-term security as well."
As Red Bull prepares for life after Lambiase, the team faces the monumental task of finding a successor capable of replicating this high-stakes dynamic. While the identity of the new engineer remains unconfirmed, the industry is watching closely to see how this shift impacts the competitive landscape, much like the strategic shifts seen in other teams, such as Ferrari's management of driver relationships.
