
The 2026 Formula 1 regulations have given the paddock plenty to digest. With smaller, lighter cars, active aerodynamics and a radically restructured power unit, the technical reset has created one of the most closely watched shifts in recent F1 history.
McLaren technical director for performance Mark Temple offered a deliberately simple explanation of the change after 11 rounds of the season. From a chassis perspective, he argued, the new cars remain recognisable despite the scale of the revisions.

“Broadly speaking, from the chassis side, we've still got four black, round tyres,” Temple said. “They behave differently, so you have to learn how they are different, but it's a case of being a different flavour of the same thing.”
His analogy was as memorable as it was precise: the chassis is like moving from ready salted crisps to paprika or smoky bacon. The packaging has changed, but the basic product remains familiar.

The comparison changes sharply when the discussion turns to the power unit. Temple likened that step to being asked to try corn tortilla chips — an entirely different product rather than a new variation of the same one.
The distinction reflects the technical substance of the 2026 rules. Active front and rear wings have replaced DRS, the tyres have been revised and the cars are more compact, but those changes remain evolutionary from the chassis side. The power unit brings a far more disruptive challenge, with the removal of the MGU-H, a near 50:50 split between combustion and electrical power, and MGU-K output almost tripled to 350 kW.
That balance has placed energy management at the centre of a driver’s workload. Lando Norris described the cars after qualifying at the Australian Grand Prix as “probably the worst” he had driven, while Oscar Piastri said qualifying could feel as though results were being decided by “computers behaving or misbehaving” rather than driver input.
The criticism fits the wider debate around the new rules, explored in FIA: driver criticism of 2026 F1 rules was “realistically only to be expected”.
Temple stressed that simulation cannot fully reproduce the experience of losing boost or power in traffic, or using too much energy and watching a rival overtake. Drivers knew the power unit would define much of their season, he said, but the reality is inevitably more visceral once they are racing other cars.
That is the central lesson of the reset: the chassis may be a new flavour of a familiar snack, but the power unit has fundamentally changed the taste of Formula 1.
