In a strategic move to ensure teams and drivers are adequately prepared for the challenges of the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA has confirmed an extension to the weekend's sole free practice session. The session, originally scheduled for one hour, will now run for 90 minutes.
The decision comes as the Miami weekend operates under the sprint format, which inherently limits the amount of track time available to teams. By extending the session, the governing body aims to provide more breathing room for participants to acclimate to the circuit and the recently implemented technical and regulatory adjustments.
The FIA noted that the decision was made following consultation with stakeholders, stating: “This decision has been taken in recognition of the gap since the last grand prix, the recently announced regulatory and technical adjustments, and the fact that the Miami Grand Prix operates under the sprint format, which reduces the amount of practice time available over the course of the weekend.”
To accommodate the extended practice window, the FIA has confirmed that the session will run from 12:00 to 13:30 local time. Consequently, all other track sessions scheduled prior to FP1 will be moved forward by 30 minutes.
For international viewers, this means FP1 at the Miami International Autodrome will now commence at 17:00 UK Time and 18:00 in much of mainland Europe. With the removal of traditional FP2 and FP3 sessions due to the sprint format, this expanded opening practice will be critical for teams looking to dial in their setups under the refined 2026 regulations.
