Franco Colapinto experienced one of those Sundays that leaves you with mixed feelings at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Argentine finished tenth at the Shanghai International Circuit and scored his first point with Alpine in Formula 1, but far from being satisfied, he offered a raw and demanding analysis of his performance.
Colapinto didn't hide his satisfaction at opening his account with the team, though he made it clear that the result was shaped by external circumstances.
"It was good to have scored a point. Sad to have scored it because of luck, because if Max (Verstappen) hadn't retired, I wouldn't have scored it," he admitted to ESPN during the post-race press conference.
Beyond the final result, the Buenos Aires native pointed to a lack of performance during key moments of the race.
"It's not positive to have finished behind cars that were slower than us. I had a lot of graining in the last stint. I had a lot of floor damage and the rear right was completely broken, so I lost a lot of downforce," he explained, highlighting the technical issues that hampered his pace in the decisive stages.

A central point of his analysis was the Safety Car intervention to clear Lance Stroll's Aston Martin. According to Colapinto, that decision completely upended his planning.
"I had a lot of bad luck. I'm angry---not because of the contact with Esteban, who apologized. That's all good. To start with a different strategy, a very good start, passing a lot of people, being ahead, and then because of a car that stops they put out a Safety Car that makes no sense," he argued.
He also compared the criteria used in other races: "In Melbourne, we needed a Safety Car and they put out a Virtual Safety Car for everything, and here, for anything that happens, they put out a Safety Car. That's what makes me the angriest---that every time I'm there to do something good, something stops me."
Despite the frustration, Colapinto valued the performance shown throughout much of the event.
"It was one of my best races, pushing every lap, starting on a harder tire, making up a lot of ground, staying behind Pierre (Gasly) in the opening laps... all for it to just go away afterwards," he summarized.
In this context, he stressed the need to find more performance alongside the team: "We have to keep working and find a lot of performance, as I had a lot of front degradation in the final laps---a disaster. We have to work with the team to improve."
His self-criticism also included a broader reflection on his current personal journey: "I gave it my all, and when you give everything and things don't work out, it makes you angry. Like yesterday in qualifying, which was the same. But that's part of F1."

In the closing stages of the race, Colapinto came close to an incident with Carlos Sainz while attempting an overtake.
"I was quite heated with Carlos; he beat me here. I wanted to pass him so badly I was going to dive in anywhere and cause a disaster, but I restrained myself and didn't lunge. I finished tenth. Luckily, I didn't screw up, because it was looking like we'd both end up out of the race. It is what it is," he confessed.
Now, the focus is already on the next stop on the calendar. "We're going all out for Japan, getting to know a new track. Hopefully with the car in better condition, with the things I'm currently lacking, and being closer to Pierre and everyone else," he concluded.
The next race will be on March 29 at Suzuka, an iconic setting that has hosted historic title deciders. There, Colapinto will look to continue building his path in Formula 1. For now, in China, he took a significant first step by scoring his first point with Alpine.
