Perez emerges as a Williams option for 2027

Sergio Perez’s management has reportedly opened talks with Williams over a potential move for the 2027 Formula 1 season, adding another layer of uncertainty to Carlos Sainz’s future at the Grove-based team.

Those options may now become significant. Williams reached the summer break with Sainz 15th in the drivers’ standings, and the team’s struggles under the 2026 regulations have reportedly encouraged him to consider alternatives. Sainz is said to be interested in Aston Martin or Alpine for 2027, depending on Fernando Alonso’s future and Alpine’s decision over Franco Colapinto.

Why Perez appeals to Williams

According to Autosport WEB, Alonso and Sainz are central figures in the 2027 market, with Max Verstappen expected to remain at Red Bull. Perez is positioned just behind the two Spaniards as another major driver-market player.

Perez was initially reported to have agreed a multi-year deal with Cadillac ahead of the American team’s 2026 Formula 1 debut. However, the latest suggestion is that he may be committed only for the first season, leaving him free to depart for 2027.

That possibility has prompted his management to begin negotiations with Williams. Team principal James Vowles is reportedly open to the idea, with Perez’s personal sponsors making him an attractive commercial proposition. The backing he brings is described as substantial enough to cover his wage and potentially leave the team with a net profit.

Reports have also suggested Williams would be willing to offer Perez a significant salary. The team’s 2027 line-up could become even more fluid if Alex Albon decides to leave, with both Albon and Sainz said to be frustrated by Williams’ current difficulties.

A reunion with Albon?

A Perez-Albon pairing would revive a familiar relationship: Perez replaced Albon at Red Bull in 2021. Their paths also crossed controversially at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, when Perez’s move into Turn 13 caused contact that ended Albon’s race and drew Vowles’ criticism.

For now, no change has been confirmed. But with Sainz weighing his options and Perez’s management already engaging Williams, the Grove team could be at the centre of the 2027 driver market.
