George Russell believes Formula 1 is set for a “tight year” after team mate Kimi Antonelli secured a stunning debut victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, leaving the Briton to settle for second following what he described as an “intense” afternoon.
Mercedes ultimately delivered a commanding 1-2 finish, yet the race itself was far from straightforward for Russell. Despite starting strongly, both he and polesitter Antonelli initially lost out to the Ferrari pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc off the line.

The challenge repeated itself at the Safety Car restart, triggered when Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin stopped on track. Once again, Ferrari capitalised in the opening phase, forcing Russell to regroup.
“Obviously the race start, Ferrari got the upper hand of us; Safety Car restart, they got the upper hand on us, and unfortunately that hindered my chances of going for victory,”* Russell explained.*

After the restart, Russell found himself tucked behind the battling Ferraris. Exercising patience, he waited for the right moment before making his move. Once clear, he stretched his advantage and secured second place, finishing just over five seconds behind Antonelli.
Despite missing out on the win, Russell was pragmatic about the outcome.
“Kimi did a great job so really well done to him, but Ferrari once again… Three races down, three races they’ve made our life pretty awkward in those opening laps. At least I’m glad it provided some good entertainment for you.”
Describing the 1-2 as “all we could ask for,” the championship leader acknowledged the significance of the team result, even if personal victory slipped away.

Antonelli’s triumph marked his first Formula 1 victory, a milestone Russell recognises as career-defining.
“It’s a day you remember forever, so a very special moment,” he said. “It brings back some memories, but it was only a matter of time for him.”
Russell was generous in his assessment of his young team mate’s performance, adding that Antonelli has “been driving really amazing this year and this weekend especially, so I’m pleased to be standing on the podium with him.”
Looking ahead to the next round in Japan, Russell underlined both Antonelli’s potential and the competitive picture forming at the front of the field.
“He’s an incredible driver, he’s got a huge amount of talent, and I’m sure it’s going to be a tight year.”
If China is any indication, Mercedes may have the edge on outright results — but with Ferrari repeatedly striking in the critical opening laps, the margins at the top remain finely balanced.
