George Russell has opened up about his desire to one day compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, describing the iconic endurance race as one of motorsport's most compelling challenges — while making clear that his Formula 1 ambitions remain the overriding priority for now.
The 2026 edition of the legendary race at the Nordschleife drew considerable attention last weekend, largely thanks to Max Verstappen's participation. For Russell, watching his rival take on the Green Hell from afar served as a moment of genuine inspiration.

"Yeah, definitely one day," Russell told media when asked whether he would like to enter the race. "To be honest, watching Max at the weekend was pretty cool to see. I've followed the race in the past and those 24-hour races — there, Bathurst as well — they're just brutal races."
There is, however, a crucial distinction between Russell's situation and that of Verstappen, who has long harboured a passion for endurance racing and is already eyeing a return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2027. Having cemented himself as one of the most decorated drivers in the sport's history, Verstappen can afford to look beyond the boundaries of Formula 1.

Russell is candid about the contrast. "All of us are in a slightly different position to Max," he said. "Obviously, we're also pursuing to win a world championship, but obviously, he's in a luxurious position to do what he enjoys. And yeah, that's great for him. And he did a great job."
The sentiment captures something broader about the realities facing F1 drivers still chasing their first title. The sport's relentless calendar already limits outside commitments, and for a driver with everything still to win in F1, diverting focus — even briefly — carries a different weight than it does for a multi-time world champion.
For Russell, the Nürburgring remains a compelling aspiration. But it is, for now, a dream firmly placed on the back burner.
