Since Michael Schumacher’s tragic skiing accident in 2013, his family has kept details of his condition strictly private. Now, in the new ZDF documentary Pferdestärke – Die Welt der Gina Schumacher, daughter Gina offers a rare and deeply personal perspective on how she has navigated the years since.
RacingNews365 had the opportunity to view the documentary ahead of its release, which sheds light on how Gina transformed her passion for horseback riding into something far more profound: a lifeline during a period of immense personal upheaval.

For Gina Schumacher, equestrian sport became more than competition. It became stability.
"After my father's accident, I really dove right in, because I had to do something," she explains. "The horses have always been important, but since then, I simply can't live without them. They've helped me through everything."
Now a multiple world champion in competitive reining, Gina describes how fully committing to her sport helped her cope with her family’s new reality. What began as passion evolved into purpose — a disciplined focus that provided structure during an uncertain time.

The documentary also features reflections from Corinna Schumacher, who recalls a conversation with her husband when Gina was just 10 years old.
Michael Schumacher, even then, sensed something distinctive in his daughter’s competitive character.
"Michael once said to me, 'Gina will be much better than you,'" Corinna recounts. "Because she's more selfish. If you're an athlete, you have to be selfish in a way. That's great, because otherwise you don't accomplish anything."
Reflecting today, Corinna adds: "He was so right."
It is a striking insight into the mindset Michael associated with elite performance — a trait he believed Gina possessed from an early age.

Sabine Kehm, Michael Schumacher’s long-time manager, also draws clear parallels between father and daughter. She recalls a moment from when Gina was 15 that revealed a level of mental strength beyond her years.
"She felt that her horse did not yet have the calm and she waited. To my mind, that took 10 minutes," Kehm explains. "I found it incredible that such a young girl was already so strong mentally. She only started when she noticed that the horse had the calm for it."
For Kehm, the resemblance to Michael was unmistakable.
"I know that focus and that tunnel vision from Michael, too, of course. I believe she got that competitive spirit from him."
That comparison — the quiet intensity, the patience, the ability to shut out distractions — echoes the defining qualities long associated with her father’s approach to performance.

Despite her success, Gina remains measured and humble about her achievements.
"I'm grateful that I can do this," she says. "It's not something you should take for granted. My parents made this possible. That's why it's always been important for me to work really hard so I can do the best I can."
In a family that has endured extraordinary circumstances, the documentary paints a portrait not only of sporting success, but of resilience — of channeling adversity into discipline, focus, and gratitude.
Pferdestärke – Die Welt der Gina Schumacher will be released in full on April 17.
