Jos Verstappen has delivered his first public reaction to the shock announcement that Gianpiero Lambiase will leave Red Bull, bringing an eventual end to one of Formula 1’s most successful driver–engineer partnerships.
Lambiase has been Max Verstappen’s race engineer since the Dutchman joined the Milton Keynes-based outfit shortly after the start of the 2016 season. Over the years, the pairing has evolved into a cornerstone of Red Bull’s success, forming one of the most effective alliances in the sport.
Earlier this week, Red Bull confirmed that Lambiase will depart in 2028. It was subsequently announced that he will take up the role of chief racing officer at McLaren.
According to Jos Verstappen, the news did not come as a surprise within the inner circle.
"We knew for a while and we also knew when it was going to happen," Jos told RaceXpress. "We have another year and a half to two years to work with him. It's a huge opportunity for him, so we understand."
"We also told him to do it and grab it with both hands. Beyond that, it's up to Red Bull to replace him. We will see."
His comments underline a sense of acceptance around the move, framing it as a professional step forward for Lambiase rather than a destabilizing rupture.
Lambiase’s departure has inevitably triggered speculation about Max Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull. The four-time world champion has previously indicated that his stay with the team was closely tied to Lambiase’s presence.
Jos Verstappen, however, downplayed suggestions that history will necessarily repeat itself.
"I think things have changed," he said. "Certainly after four championships you have achieved a lot together, but that is up to Max. However, I think he will just continue."
While the partnership between Verstappen and Lambiase has been central to Red Bull’s era of success, Jos’ remarks suggest confidence that the team can move forward — and that Max Verstappen’s commitment may no longer hinge solely on one individual relationship.
For now, with up to two more years of collaboration still ahead, the focus remains on maximizing what has already proven to be a formidable combination.
