Kimi Antonelli believes he has taken a “big step” forward in 2026 as he builds on the lessons of his rookie Formula 1 campaign — and the results are already speaking for themselves.
After back-to-back Grand Prix victories, the Mercedes driver sits at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, marking a striking evolution from the flashes of promise and inconsistency that defined his debut season.

Antonelli entered Formula 1 last year as an untested 18-year-old, drafted in to replace Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton. He immediately made an impression by becoming the only rookie to finish a treacherous wet race in Melbourne, justifying team boss Toto Wolff’s faith in promoting him to a full-time race seat with the Silver Arrows.

But his first season was far from seamless.
A series of accidents, underwhelming Qualifying performances and reliability issues contributed to a mid-season slump. However, Antonelli responded with maturity, closing out the year strongly with two podium finishes in the final four races of 2026.
That late momentum has carried decisively into the new campaign.
Mercedes have emerged as the benchmark team under the new regulations introduced this season, and Antonelli has capitalised. He finished second behind team mate George Russell in the season opener in Australia, before reversing those positions in China. Victory in Japan — with Russell fourth — gave the Italian a nine-point championship lead.
He is also the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula 1 standings.

Reflecting on his progress after winning in Japan, Antonelli was clear about the transformation.
“Big step [from 2025 to 2026],” he said when asked how much he has levelled up since his rookie year.
“Experience does a lot. Obviously last year I’ve gone through a lot and it taught me massively more than what I anticipated, and for sure it’s helping so far this year. Of course there’s still a lot of work to do, but I definitely feel much more in control of the situation.”
He also acknowledged the role Mercedes’ current package has played in his early-season surge.
“The car helps, and I’m going to try to be ready and everything because it’s one of those opportunities that doesn’t happen every day. So obviously really, really grateful with the car that the team has provided us so far, and I just need to keep my head down.”
Mercedes have won all three Grands Prix and the Sprint held so far in 2026, underlining their status as the in-form team.

Despite leading the standings, Antonelli remains realistic about the challenge posed by his more experienced team mate.
With both Mercedes drivers expected to fight for further victories as the season unfolds, their intra-team battle is shaping up to be one of 2026’s defining storylines.
Antonelli admits there is still ground to make up — particularly over one lap.
“For sure it helps that everyone started from zero, but definitely I’ve been closing the gap with [Russell],” he explained.
“I think still in Qualifying he has the upper hand, especially when it comes to Q3. He’s always able to find that little bit of extra, which I’m working on. But in terms of race pace, I think we have a really strong base.”
He added: “I feel he’s obviously a super, super strong, very complete driver. I think he showed many times last year, and that’s why it’s not going to be easy, and that’s why I need to do everything as perfect as possible.”

Whether Antonelli can maintain his championship lead remains to be seen, but the early signs are compelling. Formula 1 now heads to Miami for the fourth round of the season — a venue where the Italian out-performed Russell last year.
For Antonelli, the combination of hard-earned experience and a front-running Mercedes has created a genuine opportunity. The next phase of his development will be measured not just in victories, but in how consistently he can convert that “big step” into sustained title momentum.
