Kimi Antonelli insists he is not distracted by the prospect of an intra-team title battle with Mercedes team-mate George Russell, despite emerging as the early leader in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship.
Following victory at the Japanese Grand Prix and a fourth-place finish for Russell at Suzuka, Antonelli holds a nine-point advantage as F1 heads into its April break. That result elevated him to the top of the standings — making him the youngest driver ever to lead the championship, eclipsing Lewis Hamilton’s 2007 record by nearly three years.
With the Mercedes W17 proving the dominant package so far this season, the likelihood of both drivers becoming embroiled in a sustained championship fight appears high. It would mark the team’s first internal title contest since the Hamilton–Nico Rosberg rivalry between 2014 and 2016.

Despite the growing narrative around a potential clash with Russell, Antonelli remains composed and process-driven.
"No, I’m not worrying about that, to be fair. I’m just going to focus on myself, on what I need to do, trying to get everything right in terms of procedure, starts, and driving," Antonelli said when asked whether tensions with Russell could escalate over the course of the season.
He acknowledged the challenge that lies ahead.
"I know how strong George is, and for sure it’s going to be very hard. Plus, I think Ferrari and McLaren will get closer, so it’s going to be important to stay on top of the game, as I said before, keep raising the bar."
Rather than engaging in early championship calculations, Antonelli is prioritising development during the current break.
"But I’m not focusing on or worrying about this at the moment. I'm just going to try to make the best out of the break and try to see how I can improve those areas in order to be back stronger."

Antonelli pointed to the lessons learned over the previous year as a key factor behind his current composure.
"I've made a big step, obviously, last year I went through a lot, and it taught me massively more than what I anticipated, and for sure it’s helping so far this year."
While encouraged by his progress, he remains realistic about the work still required.
"Of course, there’s still a lot of work to do, but I definitely feel much more in control of the situation. The car helps, and I’m going to try to be ready and everything because it’s one of those opportunities that don’t happen every day."
Antonelli also underlined his appreciation for the machinery at his disposal.
"So obviously, yeah, really, really grateful with the car that the team has provided us so far, and yeah, I just need to keep my head down."
For now, the championship leader’s message is clear: ignore the noise, maximise the package, and focus inward — even as the possibility of a high-stakes Mercedes duel looms on the horizon.
