Lando Norris has played down the significance of exploratory contact between Max Verstappenâs management and McLaren, insisting the Dutchman is far from the only driver interested in joining the team he has represented throughout his Formula 1 career.
The subject surfaced around the Austrian Grand Prix, where it emerged that Verstappenâs manager, Raymond Vermeulen, had held early discussions with McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Brown acknowledged that Verstappen would be of interest to McLaren, but only in the event the team was forced to replace Norris or Oscar Piastri â a scenario he has stressed is not part of McLarenâs current plan.

There is no indication that any move could happen for 2027. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull through 2028, though the source material notes he has an exit clause that could be activated this year. Norris and Piastri, meanwhile, are understood to be under contract through at least next season.
Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix, with Silverstone again at the centre of the F1 conversation â see our British Grand Prix Silverstone guide â Norris treated the topic with humour rather than alarm.

âTo be honest, a lot of drivers want to come to McLaren. So I donât know why you just highlight Max!â Norris joked.
Norris described the idea of a four-time world champion being linked with McLaren as a positive reflection on the teamâs status, while repeatedly making clear that he does not view it as an immediate or serious issue.
âThereâs quite a few others that I know that want to come as well. I mean, itâs a cool thing,â he said. âItâs a good thing that a four-time world champion wants to come on board and wants to â potentially! â join the team. I donât know how much of itâs true, but itâs a cool thing.â
Norris added that he would welcome the chance to measure himself against major names in the future, but emphasised his own commitment to McLaren: âIâm also just excited for my future with McLaren. Iâm still going to be here for many, many more years.â
He also said he expected to continue alongside Piastri âfor more yearsâ, telling the BBC that both drivers have their names âpenned in at McLaren for much longer.â
Norris and Verstappen have had tense on-track moments and occasional media barbs during recent title battles, but Norris again underlined his respect for Verstappenâs level.
Asked whether he believes he could beat a team-mate of Verstappenâs calibre, Norris replied: âI do believe I can â I think we just have to word it carefully â beat any driver.â
He singled out Verstappenâs relentless season-long standard as the defining quality: âEvery single weekend, performing to the level that he does, is whatâs impressive.â
For Norris, the prospect of facing Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso or any of F1âs benchmark names remains an enticing challenge â but for now, his message is clear: McLarenâs current future still revolves around Norris and Piastri.
