Lewis Hamilton has opened the 2026 Formula 1 season with a level of confidence that was nowhere to be seen during his troubled first year at Ferrari.
After describing 2025 as his “worst season ever”, the seven-time world champion made a conscious decision to ensure history would not repeat itself. Three rounds into the new campaign, there are already clear signs that the reset is working — even if the full picture remains a work in progress.
Hamilton’s debut season with Ferrari in 2025 proved deeply frustrating. For the first time in his career, he failed to secure a Grand Prix podium across a full campaign. His tally of 156 points from 24 rounds marked his lowest return under the scoring system introduced in 2010.
He later labelled the year a “nightmare”, struggling to adapt both to Ferrari’s ways of working and to the team’s final car of the ground-effect era. The SF-25 never allowed him to feel fully aligned with the machinery, and the results reflected that disconnect.
The arrival of Formula 1’s 2026 regulations, however, has offered Hamilton and Ferrari a clean slate.

Determined to avoid starting a new regulatory cycle on the back foot, Hamilton committed to what has been described as a ‘pact of steel’ with Ferrari over the winter. According to Formula Technica, he went “far beyond” the normal efforts expected of an F1 driver.
In a striking show of dedication, Hamilton is believed to have parked his motorhome inside Ferrari’s Fiorano test circuit in a form of voluntary isolation. The goal was simple: embed himself completely in the 2026 project.
By effectively living at Fiorano, Hamilton spent endless hours in the simulator and in detailed discussions with engineers at the Maranello factory. Nights were dedicated to gruelling simulator sessions to ensure his influence was embedded in the DNA of the SF-26.
The approach appears to be paying dividends. Hamilton has looked significantly more comfortable in the SF-26 than he ever did in its predecessor, suggesting that his winter immersion has translated into a stronger technical connection with the car.

The start to 2026 has not been flawless. Hamilton finished sixth in Japan, underlining that both he and Ferrari still have work to do.
Yet across the opening rounds in Australia, China and Japan, Hamilton reportedly arrived with “significantly” more confidence than at any stage of his 2025 campaign.
China marked a milestone. Hamilton secured his first Ferrari Grand Prix podium with third place, having also taken P3 in the Sprint. It was a tangible reward for his winter efforts and a clear signal that the reset was real.
Japan, however, offered a reminder that consistency remains the target. Eddie Irvine suggested Hamilton cannot “take it for granted” that he is fully back to his best, noting that Charles Leclerc “outclassed” him throughout the Suzuka weekend. The Briton cut a despondent figure there, the optimism of China fading amid a more difficult outing.

Ferrari and Hamilton now face an extended pause before the Miami Grand Prix on May 1–3. The break provides a valuable opportunity to rebuild momentum and reinforce the foundations laid during the winter.
Three races into 2026, the trajectory is undeniably more positive than a year ago. Hamilton’s isolation at Fiorano symbolised a driver unwilling to drift into another lost season. The podium in China suggests the investment is already bearing fruit.
But if 2025 was a nightmare, 2026 remains a rebuilding project — one that still demands precision, patience and proof over time.
