Helmut Marko believes the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship is shaping up to be a straight fight between Mercedes team-mates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, following the Silver Arrows’ dominant start under the new technical regulations.
Mercedes has controlled the opening phase of the season, claiming 1–2 finishes in all four qualifying sessions and victory in all four races, including the sprint event in China. The scale of the advantage has been most evident over a single lap, with margins of eight tenths in Melbourne and three-and-a-half tenths in Shanghai and Suzuka.
Ferrari and McLaren have emerged as Mercedes’ nearest challengers, applying pressure during races even if they have not consistently matched the German manufacturer in qualifying trim. While the ADUO engine upgrade mechanism could allow Ferrari to close the gap on the power unit side, Marko remains unconvinced that it will be enough to dislodge Mercedes from the front.

The former long-time head of Red Bull’s young driver programme has been particularly struck by Antonelli’s immediate impact. In just his second season, the Mercedes youngster has matched Russell in qualifying and already claimed two grand prix victories, placing him at the top of the championship standings.
“His whole demeanour is very refreshing,” Marko told Austria’s national broadcaster ORF. “He was already incredibly fast everywhere in the junior categories, and it’s good to see a young driver like that coming up.”
Antonelli’s ascent has been swift, rising through the single-seater ranks in just over three years and securing four titles along the way. That momentum has translated into a string of age-related milestones in Formula 1, as he has become the youngest polesitter, fastest-lap scorer, race leader, championship leader and hat-trick scorer in the sport’s history.

Despite the praise, Marko remains cautious about Antonelli’s ability to sustain his form across a full season. Russell’s experience could yet prove decisive, particularly given Antonelli’s struggles in Europe last year.
“The question is whether he can maintain that speed and performance over the course of the season,” Marko said. “Russell is certainly the more experienced driver, and last year, once the races moved to Europe, Antonelli suffered a significant slump.”
In 2025, Antonelli scored 147 points in overseas races, but managed only three points in Europe, where nine of the 24 rounds were held.
Even with those caveats, Marko is clear about where he believes the championship will be decided.
“But it’s going to be exciting within the team, because the world championship will surely be decided between the two Mercedes drivers.”
If that prediction proves correct, the 2026 season could become a defining internal contest for Mercedes, pitting Russell’s experience against Antonelli’s record-breaking surge at the very top of Formula 1.
