Max Verstappen will make his first competitive appearance on the Nordschleife in Mercedes machinery this weekend, marking a significant step in his build-up to a major GT3 campaign later this year.
The 28-year-old is set to contest NLS2 as preparation for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, joining Lucas Auer, Dani Juncadella and Jules Gounon in a formidable line-up targeting outright victory.
Verstappen has long made clear his intention to enter a preparatory race ahead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This year, however, that plan carries added weight following a decisive change in machinery.
The Dutchman has switched from Ferrari to the Mercedes-AMG GT3, with Verstappen Racing now operating as a factory-supported Mercedes-AMG outfit. It is a calculated move, aligning the team with a platform widely regarded for its established baseline and predictable performance characteristics.
While Verstappen has sampled the Mercedes in several test outings, NLS2 will represent his first competitive experience with the car on the Nordschleife — a circuit that offers little margin for adaptation.

Having previously raced only sparingly in Germany with Ferrari machinery, Verstappen faces a fresh learning phase. The Nordschleife’s unique demands place a premium on track time, particularly when it comes to understanding car behaviour and refining setup direction.
For both driver and team, NLS2 provides a critical performance benchmark. It offers an opportunity to evaluate strengths, identify areas for refinement, and build a clearer picture ahead of the 24-hour challenge.
The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is widely regarded as a stable and forgiving platform, noted for strong tyre management and reliability — attributes that are essential in endurance racing. That foundation should provide a consistent base from which Verstappen and his team-mates can fine-tune the car.
Endurance success hinges on achieving the right balance across a multi-driver line-up. Verstappen’s focus this weekend will therefore extend beyond outright pace. Fine-tuning the car to accommodate both his own preferences and those of Auer, Juncadella and Gounon will be central to the programme.
While Verstappen’s competitive instincts are undiminished, preparation remains the overriding objective. The ultimate target is the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May, where Verstappen Racing aims to arrive with a fully optimised and competitive package.
A video released ahead of the weekend shows Verstappen preparing for Friday’s testing at the Nordschleife, offering an early glimpse into the start of this crucial phase in his campaign.
