Max Verstappen has been handed a five-second time penalty by the stewards following a post-race investigation at the Miami Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was scrutinised for allegedly crossing the solid white line at the pit exit during the race, an infraction that typically results in a swift and near-certain punishment.
Curiously, the race officials opted against issuing an immediate penalty during the Grand Prix, choosing instead to conduct a more thorough review of the incident once the checkered flag had fallen.

The incident unfolded after Verstappen made an early pit stop at the Miami International Autodrome. His strategic call was prompted by a safety car period, which was triggered by a chaotic sequence involving Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly.

Following his stop, Verstappen was suspected of breaching the pit exit regulations as he rejoined the circuit. However, the initial lack of conclusive footage delayed the stewards' verdict.

After the race, officials reviewed additional data and camera angles to reach a definitive conclusion. The stewards ultimately decided that Verstappen was guilty of the infringement and issued a five-second time penalty.
Despite the sanction, the penalty did not alter Verstappen's final classification. Because he crossed the finish line more than five seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton, the Red Bull driver successfully retained his fifth-place finish.
In their official document, the stewards provided clarity on the delayed decision-making process: "When the incident occurred, there was limited video evidence to make a clear decision on whether an infringement had occurred. We therefore decided to investigate the incident after the race, to see if we could get better video evidence of the incident in the meantime, perhaps from other angles."
The newly acquired footage proved decisive. "We were able to do so. The new angles did show more views of the pit exit line and the incident in question," the statement continued.

During the hearing, Verstappenâreferred to as the driver of Car 3âexplained that he was navigating the pit exit and rejoining the track under full course yellow conditions. However, the stewards concluded that the physical evidence was undeniable.
"The Stewards determined that the outside of the front left-hand tyre did cross the outside of the solid white pit exit line in violation of Appendix L, Chapter IV Article 6 c) of the International Sporting Code," the ruling stated. "Given the nature of the infraction the Stewards elected to impose a penalty of 5 seconds."
