Max Verstappen’s career has been defined by a singular, uncompromising approach to racing. While his talent is undeniable, former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer suggests that the Dutchman’s “relentless pursuit of perfection” has frequently pushed him beyond the boundaries of acceptable conduct on the track.
Verstappen’s aggressive style has been a focal point of debate since his arrival at Red Bull in 2016. His defensive maneuvers early in his tenure were so contentious that they prompted an official FIA clampdown on late movements. This pattern of operating at the absolute extremities of the regulations continued into his 2021 title battle with Lewis Hamilton, where many of his peers felt he frequently crossed the line of fair wheel-to-wheel racing.

Reflecting on these moments, Palmer notes that Verstappen’s desperation to extract the maximum from every situation often leads to unnecessary conflict. “What they’ve both got in common is a level of controversy where they’ve pushed the rules too far because they’ve been so desperate for executing the absolute maximum,” Palmer said on the F1 Nation podcast, drawing a direct comparison between Verstappen and seven-time champion Michael Schumacher. “Rather than accepting on any given day that it’s not on, that’s not the move, they’ll try something that will then get them into trouble.”

Palmer highlights a shared trait between the two champions: a tendency to find themselves in avoidable trouble. While Schumacher famously collided with title rivals in the 1994 and 1997 season finales—the latter resulting in his disqualification from the championship—Verstappen managed to race cleanly during his own title deciders in 2021 and 2025. Nevertheless, the frequency of his infractions remains a defining characteristic.
Verstappen currently holds the record for the most penalty points accumulated by any driver since the system’s inception in 2014. In 2024, he came perilously close to a race ban after reaching 11 penalty points. While he avoided that sanction, his racing tactics remained under scrutiny, particularly following multiple incidents with Lando Norris.
When faced with criticism regarding his aggressive tactics, Verstappen has remained steadfast in his approach. “I’m a three-time world champion. I think I know what I’m doing,” he stated in 2024.

Securing a fourth world title has likely only reinforced his belief in his methods. However, the debate persists; some observers argue that his uncompromising nature may have come at a cost, pointing to his collision with George Russell at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix as a pivotal moment that may have hindered his championship campaign. Ultimately, Verstappen remains a driver who refuses to settle for anything less than the maximum, regardless of the risks involved.
