Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has moved swiftly to quash speculation surrounding a high-profile conversation between Jos Verstappen and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff in the Montreal paddock, insisting there was nothing suspicious or strategic about the encounter.
The meeting took place on Thursday during media day ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, with Jos Verstappen spotted sitting alongside Wolff in what quickly became one of the most discussed images on social media. For many observers, the optics were impossible to ignore — the father and manager of the four-time world champion, deep in conversation with the head of Mercedes, immediately ignited speculation about a possible transfer dialogue.

But Mekies was having none of it. Asked directly for his reaction, the Red Bull team principal was measured and dismissive in equal measure.
"I tell you what, as much as it may sound exciting to see that from the outside, I really don't think there is an intention particularly behind," Mekies said. "If any of these guys wants to have a chat, it's going to be a story anyway. So, we speak all the time with Max and with Jos."

Mekies was quick to point to the most obvious explanation for the two men being seen together. Max Verstappen had spent the previous weekend racing a Mercedes-AMG GT3 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours — an event that ended in heartbreak for the Dutchman after a driveshaft failure ended his challenge with the race still running. Given that context, a conversation between Jos and Wolff barely registers as surprising.
"It's completely natural that they can have a conversation with Toto," Mekies continued. "Max was racing in a Mercedes last week, a GT3. So, I genuinely don't think it's part of a game plan to get a message or another through."
The remarks align with the broader narrative around Verstappen's future, which has been a recurring topic throughout the 2026 season. The 28-year-old has himself spoken in Canada about his commitment to Formula 1, signalling that the direction of the sport's regulations is heading in "a very positive direction" — words that point firmly towards a continued presence on the grid rather than any imminent departure.
For Mekies, the entire episode is simply the product of two prominent figures in the paddock sharing a brief exchange — nothing more. The Red Bull team principal was at pains to stress that such interactions are routine in Formula 1, where relationships between teams, drivers, and their management circles operate in a compact and interconnected environment.
His composed response will do little to dampen the appetite for transfer speculation among fans, but it does reinforce the reality that not every conversation carries a contract negotiation behind it. For now, at least, Red Bull remain entirely unconcerned.
