The 2026 Formula 1 season has quickly evolved into a high-stakes internal battle at Mercedes. While George Russell entered the campaign as the clear favorite, the narrative has shifted dramatically after just three races. With Kimi Antonelli currently leading his teammate by nine points, the Silver Arrows find themselves in the enviable position of managing two drivers capable of fighting for the world title.
Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord has offered a candid look into the team’s philosophy regarding this burgeoning rivalry. Speaking on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, Lord emphasized that the team is not looking to stifle the competition between their drivers.

“We want it to be intense, and we want it to be all-out competition on track,” Lord stated. “That rivalry as an F1 driver is always there. Your teammate is a colleague but also your biggest rival, and we know that that is going to continue to grow.”
Despite the intensity, Lord remains optimistic about the team dynamic. “It’s in a really good place at the moment, and we hope it will stay there too,” he added. The team is eager to see how the competition develops once both drivers experience cleaner race weekends, noting that neither has had a completely smooth run through the opening three rounds.

The rapid rise of the teenage sensation has not gone unnoticed by the wider F1 paddock. George Russell, who secured victory in Australia, has been forced to adapt quickly to the threat posed by his younger teammate, who followed up with back-to-back wins in China and Japan.
Former F1 driver Martin Brundle has issued a stark warning to Russell, suggesting that the veteran must recalibrate his approach to the championship. “If I was George, I’d be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season,” Brundle told Sky Sports. “He’s got to treat Kimi Antonelli just as if he’s Lewis Hamilton in his peak and a threat for the championship.”

As the paddock heads to the Miami Grand Prix, all eyes will be on the Mercedes garage to see if Russell can reclaim the momentum or if Antonelli will continue his remarkable championship charge.
