Naomi Schiff, former W Series driver and Sky Sports F1 analyst, believes Kimi Antonelli has firmly established himself as a genuine force within Mercedes β and not merely a promising rookie riding on the coattails of his more experienced team-mate George Russell.
Mercedes have made a dominant start to the 2026 season, winning every grand prix so far. Of the five victories claimed by the Brackley outfit, Antonelli has taken four. The 19-year-old became the youngest driver to lead the championship standings after back-to-back wins in China and Japan, before extending his record by becoming the first driver in Formula 1 history to win his opening four races consecutively, adding victories in Miami and Canada.

Heading into the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, much of the narrative surrounded Russell. Given his history at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal was widely viewed as the ideal stage for the Briton to halt his team-mate's momentum. Russell duly delivered in qualifying, taking pole position and winning the sprint race, before engaging Antonelli in a tense, wheel-to-wheel battle during the grand prix. However, a battery failure ultimately ended Russell's race β and, with it, any chance of a meaningful response.
For Schiff, it was that fierce on-track confrontation β before the retirement intervened β that proved most revealing. Toto Wolff himself has acknowledged the delicate balancing act that Mercedes now faces as the intra-team battle intensifies.

"Honestly, that moment I think was really where the gloves came off," Schiff said on the Up To Speed podcast. "And I'm almost happy that it happened because on one hand, Kimi is really showing that he's not just going to be bullied or made to feel like the little brother. He was like, 'I'm here. I'm going to race you, and I'm going to race you hard.'"
Schiff was also quick to credit Russell, even amid Antonelli's extraordinary run of form. The veteran Mercedes driver's ability to defend without sacrificing his own pace remains, in her view, one of his most underappreciated qualities.
"George, whilst he's a great driver and he's full of confidence as well, he's so difficult to overtake. That's one thing I will give George so much credit for is he is incredible in his defensive driving in the sense that he never loses time while doing it. It doesn't compromise him too much."
With Antonelli now holding a 43-point championship lead β and showing little sign of being weighed down by the title fight β Schiff sees nothing but compelling racing ahead. "I think it's going to be such an exciting season ahead watching these two go head-to-head," she added.
