An unfortunate equipment failure has reportedly cost Nico Hulkenberg a significant financial reward, after a pit stop issue at the Chinese Grand Prix denied him a points finish — and with it, a substantial bonus.
According to reports, Hulkenberg earns €5 million per season at Audi. However, his contract also includes a lucrative performance clause that pays him €50,000 for every point scored in 2026. That incentive structure turned a routine race setback into a costly blow in Shanghai.
Hulkenberg was running comfortably in eighth place during the Chinese Grand Prix when he pitted at the end of lap 35. What should have been a standard stop quickly unraveled into a 16-second delay, caused by a failure of the right-rear wheel gun.
The malfunction dropped him out of the points-paying positions. Instead of securing eighth — a result that would have brought a valuable haul under his bonus clause — Hulkenberg ultimately crossed the line in 11th.
Given the €50,000-per-point structure, finishing eighth would have delivered a reported €200,000 bonus. The equipment failure therefore carried consequences beyond the sporting result.

The disappointment in China was compounded by the broader context of Hulkenberg’s season so far. The race marked the first grand prix he had been able to start in 2026 after a technical issue prevented him from taking part in the season opener in Australia. On that occasion, he was forced to watch from the Hinwil-based team’s garage.
Matters did not improve in Japan, where Hulkenberg again finished 11th. As a result, he remains without a point since the introduction of the new power unit regulations.
While Hulkenberg is still waiting to open his account, Audi has at least registered on the scoreboard. Gabriel Bortoleto has scored two points, ensuring the team is no longer empty-handed in the championship.
For Hulkenberg, however, the Shanghai setback stands as a stark reminder of how fine the margins can be — not just in terms of results, but financially as well.
