Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has no doubt that Mercedes teammates and current title rivals Kimi Antonelli and George Russell will eventually clash this season.
It has been a full decade since two Mercedes drivers went head-to-head for the championship. Between 2014 and 2016, Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton fought a bitter intra-team battle in a dominant car. Hamilton prevailed in the first two years before Rosberg secured the championship in 2016, which ultimately proved to be his final season in the sport. The two drivers shared a long-standing friendship, but it could not survive the inherent tension of a high-stakes title fight.

Antonelli currently leads Russell by 20 points after securing his third successive victory at Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix. The Italian driver struggled to match his teammate's pace during his rookie season, leading many to believe that Russell would not face particularly strong internal competition this year. However, Russell's status as the pre-season title favorite is now under serious threat.

While Russell maintains that he has not underestimated Antonelli, the 19-year-old’s sudden leap in performance has surprised many within the Formula 1 paddock. Antonelli has already made history by becoming the first teenage championship leader in the sport.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Rosberg expressed his belief that Mercedes will not be able to maintain a harmonious relationship between their drivers for the entire year.
"Of course, a clash between the two of them will come," Rosberg stated. "We’ve already seen how close they are, and it’s inevitable that it will happen, especially if there’s a chance of winning a title at stake."
Rosberg and Hamilton famously came together on track multiple times during the early years of the turbo-hybrid era. Following a catastrophic, race-ending tangle at the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff even threatened to fire both drivers for failing to uphold the team’s best interests.

Drawing from his own intense experiences, Rosberg has urged Wolff to be fully prepared for the inevitable fallout between his current drivers. While Russell and Hamilton were closely matched for most of their partnership between 2022 and 2024, Wolff never had to manage any severe internal crises during that period.
"Sit down and talk about it," Rosberg advised. "When things happen on the track, you have to deal with them off it. This is more of a piece of advice for Toto Wolff, who needs to sit down with them, discuss everything, and know in advance how to behave when certain confrontational situations arise."

Similar predictions of internal strife were made regarding the McLaren pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri last season. While the two did collide on two occasions, their working relationship appeared to remain healthy throughout the year.
Furthermore, there is no guarantee that the two Mercedes drivers will be the only contenders fighting for the championship. McLaren, in particular, is gaining significant momentum. Norris put Antonelli under sustained pressure during Sunday’s race, proving that the battle for the title may extend well beyond the Mercedes garage.
