Alisha Palmowski wasted no time announcing her credentials for the 2026 F1 Academy championship, topping the sole Free Practice session at the Shanghai International Circuit with a commanding display of speed and precision. The Red Bull Racing driver set the benchmark at 2:04.550, establishing a decisive 0.467-second advantage over Ferrari junior Alba Larsen and staking an early claim as the driver to beat in what promises to be a fiercely competitive season.
Despite completing fewer laps than many of her rivals in the dusty opening conditions, Palmowski's final-sector proficiency proved decisive. The 19-year-old British driver progressively elevated her performance throughout the 40-minute session, ultimately delivering a performance that underscored the considerable expectations surrounding her sophomore campaign. As a second-year driver returning with championship ambitions, Palmowski's authority in practice represents a significant psychological advantage ahead of qualifying and race day.
The practice session itself witnessed an enthralling battle for supremacy among multiple front-runners. Larsen, fresh from a strong off-season, initially led the charge before being overtaken in quick succession by Rachel Robertson, Emma Felbermayr, and rookie sensation Peyton Westcott, who set a 2:05.319. The American Mercedes driver’s rapid integration into the series proved impressive, sitting third, merely 0.024 seconds adrift of Larsen—a testament to her raw pace and the increasingly competitive nature of the rookie contingent.
The Shanghai International Circuit’s 5.451-kilometer layout demanded precision and bravery from all competitors. The technical opening sequence through Turns 1-4, combined with the demanding tyre management required along the 1.2-kilometer straight between Turns 13 and 14, provided a stern examination of car control and strategic thinking. A brief incident involving Shi Wei spinning at Turn 1 highlighted the unforgiving nature of the circuit, particularly under low-grip conditions.
Palmowski’s Campos Racing teammate Rafaela Ferreira secured fourth position, demonstrating the competitive strength of the Spanish outfit. Lisa Billard emerged as the second-quickest rookie in fifth, while Mathilda Paatz, Ella Lloyd, and Emma Felbermayr rounded out the leading positions—indicating that depth of talent remains distributed across multiple teams.
With only one practice session available to acclimate themselves to the demanding Shanghai venue, both experienced drivers and the 11 rookies making their full-time debuts faced significant preparation constraints. Qualifying, scheduled for 14:10 local time, will provide the next opportunity to establish the genuine pecking order, with the top eight reversed for the opening race.
Palmowski’s statement performance has sent a clear message: the title race starts now.
