Pierre Gasly will start the Formula 1 British Grand Prix three places lower than he qualified after the FIA stewards ruled that he unnecessarily impeded Lance Stroll during Q1 at Silverstone.
The Alpine driver had initially secured 12th on the grid, a position that left him within reach of the points battle. But the post-qualifying investigation changed the complexion of his weekend, dropping him to 15th and promoting Nico Hulkenberg, Ollie Bearman and Carlos Sainz by one place each. Hulkenberg now moves into 12th.

The incident occurred during the first phase of qualifying, when Stroll was on a flying lap in his Aston Martin. Gasly, who was on an in lap, was judged to have been travelling slowly on the racing line, forcing Stroll to run off track to avoid the Alpine.
Stroll complained about the moment immediately, and the stewards confirmed during the session that Gasly would be investigated for alleged impeding. Alpine and Gasly’s representatives later attended the hearing to present their case, but the explanation did not prevent a penalty.

The decision adds another layer to a Silverstone weekend already shaped by qualifying margins and race execution, with the broader strategic picture examined in our look at the British GP tactical options.
In its written decision, the FIA stated that Stroll was on a timed lap while Gasly was on the racing line “at a slow speed” during an in lap.
Alpine argued that Gasly’s radio was not working at the time, meaning the team could not warn him that Stroll was approaching. The team also said it had expected another driver, Kimi Antonelli, to remain behind Gasly rather than overtake, as Gasly understood Antonelli was not on a timed lap.
However, the stewards concluded that this did not fully excuse the situation. The FIA document stated: “Gasly remained at a slow speed on the racing line, and the evidence showed that the driver had information available to him, including the dashboard display, to appreciate Stroll was approaching on a timed lap.”
It continued: “In those circumstances, the stewards determined that Gasly unnecessarily impeded Stroll and therefore imposed the standard penalty of a three grid position drop.”
For Gasly, the consequence is straightforward but significant. Starting 15th rather than 12th leaves him with more traffic to clear and a narrower route into points contention.
What had looked like a difficult but manageable race from the edge of the midfield has now become a far more complicated recovery task for Alpine.
