Alexander Dunne confident F2 victory will come after consistent campaign
Dunne’s consistency has delivered a strong foundation
Alexander Dunne sits fourth in the Drivers’ Championship after a highly consistent FIA Formula 2 campaign, although the Rodin Motorsport driver is still waiting for his first victory of the season.
The Alpine Academy driver has collected five podiums and four further top-five finishes, while his qualifying form has been one of the defining strengths of his year. Until Budapest, Dunne had not finished outside the top four in a Friday session, and he has qualified inside the top three at every round since Miami.
“In general, it's been not too bad. I think we've been relatively consistent,” Dunne said. “Qualifying has been a major strong point, being in the top three every weekend since Miami, which of course is really nice.”
He believes that consistency over one lap is particularly important, but admits that the team’s race performance still requires improvement.
“Being consistent in quali is really important. I think that's definitely something I'm happy about. Then in terms of races, I think pace we need to improve a little bit, but we're getting there.”
Race pace is the next step
Now in his second F2 campaign, Dunne says the experience gained during his rookie season has helped him become more confident across the weekend. He also points to the continuity of working with the same Rodin team with which he made his debut.
“I learned a lot from quali last year. There was also a few areas as a rookie I needed to improve on, which I think I've done a good job focusing on this year,” he explained. “The team also do a very good job with the car as well. The car is always in the window of where we want it to be.”
Dunne identifies race pace as the main area of focus, though he believes recent progress has provided encouragement. He described Spa as a step in the right direction and said the team had found solutions that appeared to be working consistently.
His approach remains centred on maximising every result rather than forcing an outcome. “Whether we have the pace to win or the pace to finish fifth, whatever it is, I think we just always need to try and finish as high as we possibly can,” he said.
That measured mindset mirrors the wider F2 emphasis on performance over speculation, as seen in Nikola Tsolov’s approach to growing F1 interest.
Monza and Madrid in Dunne’s sights
Dunne expects his pace to return to winning levels soon and is confident he can end the season with a victory. He is looking forward to Monza, which he describes as enjoyable and exciting, while Madrid’s high-speed street circuit will be new to the entire field.
For now, the priority is simple: maximise each weekend and let the championship position follow.
