Following a chaotic and fiercely contested Miami Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has launched a staunch defence of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, suggesting that anyone still criticising the new generation of cars should "hide."
Formula 1 arrived in South Florida after a five-week spring break, providing the paddock with a first look at the modifications teams had installed following early-season complaints regarding the new technical rules. Despite these changes, vocal criticism persisted throughout the weekend. Lando Norris expressed his ongoing disappointment, going as far as to suggest that the only viable fix for the current formula is to eliminate the battery entirely.

However, Sunday’s race delivered a compelling spectacle. A fierce early-race battle for the lead unfolded between multiple teams before Mercedes prodigy Kimi Antonelli stretched his legs in the latter stages, ultimately cruising to his third consecutive victory.
For Wolff, the on-track action in Miami was the ultimate vindication of the 2026 regulations. Speaking to the media, the Mercedes boss did not hold back against the detractors.

"If there's one single person that complains about the race today, I think they should hide, honestly," Wolff declared.
He acknowledged that the nature of the Miami track played a role in the quality of the racing, but remained adamant that the sport delivered a premium product. "Now, obviously this track is a little bit easier, it's not so energy-stuffed. There's good games and there's bad games, so I think that was great, great advertising for F1."

While Antonelli secured the grand prix win on Sunday, Mercedes did not have it all their own way in Miami. The Brackley-based squad was defeated in Saturday's sprint race, with Norris taking a commanding victory for McLaren. You can read more about that in the 2026 Miami Sprint results.
It is clear that Mercedes' rivals utilized the April break to close the performance gap to the front of the field. Yet, Sunday's main event demonstrated that the Silver Arrows still maintain a crucial advantage over the chasing pack.
Despite the victory, Wolff was quick to warn against complacency, asserting that Mercedes must remain razor-sharp in what is shaping up to be a relentless development war.
"When it comes to the competitive order, we're still holding on to it," Wolff explained. "But the McLarens have made a big step. Red Bull on pure pace was massive in qualifying. I guess the strategy didn't really play well for them. In that respect, it wasn't easy at all."
Looking ahead, the Mercedes boss emphasized the importance of continuous improvement. "So we just got to keep developing, because this is a development race throughout the season and see how our upgrades are going to work in Montreal."
