The 2026 FIA Formula 3 season has its first breakout star. In a display of pure clinical precision at Albert Park, Campos Racing's Ugo Ugochukwu secured a historic maiden victory in the Melbourne Feature Race, signaling his arrival as a primary title contender.
Starting from the front row, Ugochukwu's path to the top step wasn't immediate. A slightly sluggish getaway saw him briefly drop to third as Trident's Freddie Slater and polesitter Théophile Nael surged ahead. However, the American driver's composure remained unshaken. By Lap 2, Ugochukwu executed a bold move on Slater at Turn 9 to reclaim second, and just moments later, he utilized the same corner to snatch the lead from Nael.
From that point forward, Ugochukwu was the class of the field. Even through a mid-race Safety Car period---triggered by Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi's accident---and a chaotic series of restarts, the Campos driver maintained a comfortable gap. While the battle raged behind him, involving time penalties for Nael (false start) and contact between Nicola Lacorte and Noah Stromsted, Ugochukwu remained untouchable in clean air.
The race ultimately concluded under Safety Car conditions following a late retirement for Woohyun Shin. This secured the win for Ugochukwu, with Freddie Slater taking a well-deserved second place. Due to the flurry of post-race penalties handed to Nael and Stromsted, ART Grand Prix's Taito Kato inherited the final podium spot.
With 25 points now to his name, Ugochukwu leaves Australia leading the Drivers' Championship. It was a weekend of redemption and dominance for the young driver, who proved that he has the race craft and the speed to master one of the calendar's most challenging street circuits. If Melbourne was a preview of what's to come, the 2026 F3 season belongs to Ugochukwu.
