Oliver Bearmanās impressive start to the 2026 Formula 1 season has reignited discussion about his long-term future ā and whether Ferrari should act quickly to secure him for 2027.
After making his full-time debut with Haas in 2025 as a Ferrari Driver Academy graduate, the British driver has strengthened his case with performances that extend beyond raw speed. With points finishes in both the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix ā including a top-five result in Shanghai in a Haas ā Bearman has shown he can deliver under pressure.
The question is no longer whether he has potential. It is whether Ferrari can afford to wait.
Bearmanās early-season form has been impossible to ignore. Scoring points in Australia and China, and running inside the top five in Shanghai, underlined both his pace and race execution.
Performing at that level in a Haas adds weight to the argument that he is ready for a bigger opportunity. If Ferrari is planning for the future, promoting a driver already embedded within its academy structure could represent a decisive and forward-thinking move.
But Bearmanās case is built on more than just results.
In a recent interview with F1 Beyond The Grid, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu offered detailed insight into the qualities that make Bearman stand out.
āThis is the amazing thing about that kid, but in those tough moments, of course, he is really disappointed, he is gutted, and he feels destroyed, but when we have those conversations, he is very, very open, and he listens,ā Komatsu said.
āEven if he does not agree, he still listens; that is a quality that I noticed very, very early on. If you are able to listen and digest the information coming from the other person, whether you agree or not, or whether you like it or not, it gives you the chance to improve.ā
Komatsu also recalled a pivotal conversation before the Shanghai weekend.
āI remember speaking to him in Shanghai before the weekend and saying, āLook, I donāt care about lap time this weekend as I know you are quick. If you are three tenths off Esteban all weekend, I donāt care, as I donāt doubt your speed. But you need to do every single lap on the run programme. That is all I care.āā
Bearman delivered exactly that.
āHe got on with it and did every single lap on the run programme. What was the result? He scored points.ā
At a team like Ferrari, where expectations are historic and pressure is relentless, speed alone is not enough. The ability to absorb feedback, work collaboratively with engineers, and execute precisely across a race weekend is what defines long-term success.
Bearmanās openness to criticism and his willingness to prioritise team objectives over personal lap time demonstrate a level of maturity rarely seen in drivers so early in their careers. His approach suggests not just promise, but sustainability ā the foundation required to succeed at a top Formula 1 team.
Having only just completed his rookie season, Bearman is still at the beginning of his journey. Yet his performances and mindset indicate he is building the profile of a future Ferrari driver.
If Ferrari is serious about shaping its next era, acting sooner rather than later on Oliver Bearman could prove to be one of its smartest decisions in years.
