Carlos Sainz commits to Williams for 2027 despite difficult 2026

Williams locks in its 2027 line-up
Williams has confirmed Carlos Sainz will remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season, extending the Spaniardâs commitment on a multi-year deal.
The announcement follows Alex Albonâs agreement to a one-season extension for 2027. With both drivers now confirmed, Williams will retain the same line-up for the teamâs 50th season in Formula 1. Albonâs deal was covered in Alexander Albon to remain with Williams in 2027.

For Sainz, 2027 will be his third season with Williams. The decision arrives during a difficult 2026 campaign, with the team ninth in the constructorsâ standings after 11 rounds. Williams has scored 11 points and has failed to add to that total across the last five races.
A vote of confidence during a difficult season
Sainzâs extension is significant because Williams has not yet matched the progress made last year. In 2025, the team finished fifth in the championship â its best result since 2017 â after Sainz contributed two podiums.

The team began the 2026 regulation change with an overweight car, making weight reduction its principal focus throughout the season. That priority may have come at the expense of aerodynamic development, leaving Williams struggling to build on its previous gains.
With Sainzâs contract due to expire at the end of 2026, speculation grew that he could seek a move elsewhere. However, his available alternative would have been another midfield team. His decision to stay instead represents a clear commitment to Williamsâ recovery project.
âI truly believe in the people that form this team, both at the factory and at the race tracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background,â Sainz said. âWe have what it takes to turn this around together.â
Vowles backs Sainzâs leadership
Team principal James Vowles described Sainz as a leader of the project, highlighting both his performance on track and his contribution behind the scenes.
âItâs not just his racecraft and speed that stand out, but the work he does behind the scenes in the pursuit of high performance,â Vowles said. âAlong with Alex, I truly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid.â
Williamsâ record includes nine constructorsâ titles, seven driversâ championships and 114 Grand Prix victories. The team now expects Sainz and Albon to help restore it to that competitive standard.
