Five key storylines to watch in the second half of the 2026 F1 season

The Formula 1 summer break has created a pause in the 2026 campaign, but it has done little to reduce the sense of momentum around the championship. The opening half of the season has established a clear leader, yet Mercedes have not been able to turn that advantage into complete control. Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull have all shown enough pace to suggest that the competitive order can still shift before the chequered flag falls on the season.

Here are five of the major storylines that will define the second half of 2026.

Can Kimi Antonelli become Formula 1’s youngest-ever World Champion?

Mercedes entered the season as the team many expected to lead the championship. The surprise has been the identity of the driver who has delivered that charge. Rather than George Russell, it has been Kimi Antonelli who has established himself at the head of the Silver Arrows’ campaign.

The Italian claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory in China. Two weeks later, another triumph in Japan made him the youngest driver ever to lead the World Championship standings. That was not a short-lived moment. Antonelli has remained at the top through the first half of the season and has added four more victories to his tally, taking his total to six wins.

The campaign has not been entirely straightforward. Antonelli suffered a DNF in Barcelona, and there have been weekends when Mercedes have not enjoyed the same level of control. His response, however, has been one of the most important features of his season. Even when the car has been less competitive, he has continued to collect points by maximising the opportunities available to him.

That consistency has given Antonelli a substantial platform for the second half. He began the summer break with a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton, while Russell was a further six points behind Hamilton in third. It is a lead that gives the Mercedes driver room to absorb difficult weekends, although the increasingly competitive field means it cannot be treated as decisive.

Should Antonelli maintain the level of performance he has shown so far, he will have a genuine opportunity to secure his maiden Drivers’ Championship. The achievement would carry an additional historical significance: he would become the sport’s youngest-ever title winner, replacing the current record-holder, Sebastian Vettel.

The championship is still open to further twists and turns. But the central question is already clear. Can Antonelli preserve his composure and points-scoring efficiency as the pressure increases, or will the chasing pack turn his early advantage into a much tighter title fight?

An increasingly close fight at the front

Antonelli’s lead should not be mistaken for a lack of competition at the front. Mercedes have held the advantage in the standings, but the first half of 2026 has shown that the leading teams are closing in on one another.

Ferrari were the first team other than Mercedes to win a race. Lewis Hamilton took his maiden victory in red at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, before Charles Leclerc added another win for the Scuderia at Silverstone. Those results gave Ferrari more than a single breakthrough: they demonstrated that the team could convert its pace into victories with both drivers.

McLaren joined the fight at the final round before the break in Hungary. Lando Norris took his first victory as a World Champion, adding another name to the list of teams capable of winning on merit. Red Bull, meanwhile, have continued to show that they cannot be discounted. Max Verstappen finished third in Belgium and followed that result with second place at the Hungaroring.

The significance of that spread of performance is reflected in Antonelli’s own assessment after qualifying in Budapest. He said that “this year is going to be a development race” and warned that Mercedes needed to “keep our head down, because it's going to be a fight all the way until the end.”

That development battle will be central to the remaining rounds. The front-running teams are not simply competing on race weekends; they are also competing to bring effective upgrades to the circuit before their rivals do. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella captured the challenge by noting that everyone was doing a good job of bringing successful upgrades. In his view, the crucial question would be how many upgrades the top teams could deliver for the rest of the season.

For Ferrari, the development story will be especially important. The team’s title ambitions have already been strengthened by its two victories, and its planned engine work will be closely watched. Ferrari’s second 2026 engine upgrade is targeting a 0.2-second gain at Monza, underlining how narrow the margins may become as the campaign progresses.

The first half has therefore produced a leader, but not a dominant championship. Mercedes have the points advantage; Ferrari have proven their winning potential; McLaren have returned to the front; and Red Bull remain capable of applying pressure. The second half could be shaped as much by development timing as by the raw pace seen at any individual circuit.

Can Aston Martin and Williams fight back?

The leading teams are separated by increasingly small margins, but the situation is very different for Aston Martin and Williams. Both teams endured particularly difficult starts to the 2026 campaign and now face the challenge of recovering ground before the season ends.

Aston Martin struggled to accumulate mileage during pre-season testing because of various issues with its car. Those reliability concerns carried into the opening races. The team was unable to complete a full race distance at the first two rounds, and although fixes were introduced at subsequent Grands Prix, the performance deficit remained.

The arrival of a significant upgrade package in Hungary offered a more positive indication. It represented an important step for the Silverstone-based team, but it is only the beginning of the recovery effort. Further updates are expected, including one from Honda at the Dutch Grand Prix. The key question is whether those developments can turn improved reliability and a more encouraging technical direction into a meaningful gain in competitive performance.

Williams have faced a different kind of disappointment. After rising to fifth last year, the team has fallen back to ninth in 2026. That regression has acted as a reality check, and the pain may continue for several more rounds. An upgrade is scheduled for Azerbaijan in late September, giving the Grove-based outfit a specific opportunity to change the trajectory of its season.

For both teams, the timing of their updates will matter. A package introduced late in the year has less time to deliver results, but it can still alter the competitive picture if it produces the expected step forward. Aston Martin and Williams will be hoping that their respective development programmes can convert difficult opening phases into stronger finishes.

The progress of Aston Martin will be particularly worth monitoring after its Hungary upgrade and the planned Honda update at Zandvoort. Williams, meanwhile, must find a way to recover from ninth place and return closer to the level that produced fifth last year. Neither task will be simple, but both teams still have a clear objective for the remaining races: haul themselves back up the order before the season is over.

Malaysia returns to the Formula 1 calendar

The 2026 calendar has already undergone change. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were initially scheduled to take place in April, but both were later removed from that position because of the ongoing situation in the Middle East region.

In July, it was announced that Malaysia would host the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4. The event will sit between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, adding a significant change to the shape of the late-season calendar.

Sepang made its debut in 1999 and has hosted a number of thrilling races. Its return is therefore one of the most distinctive events awaiting the sport after the break. The circuit combines fast, flowing corners with long straights and heavy-braking zones, creating a demanding test for the cars and drivers. Its unpredictable weather can also produce surprises, adding another layer of uncertainty to the weekend.

Max Verstappen was the last driver to win in Malaysia, taking victory at the venue’s most recent Formula 1 race in 2017. At the time, it was only his second triumph. The question now is who will claim the next win at the Sepang International Circuit.

The answer will not be known until October, but Malaysia’s return adds a different challenge to a championship already defined by changing competitive trends. With Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull all involved in the fight at the front, Sepang could become an important test of which teams can adapt most effectively to its combination of corners, straights, braking zones and weather uncertainty.

Will the driver market produce major moves?

The 2026 driver market was already generating “silly season” discussion early in the campaign, although some of that speculation was played down by those involved. As the second half begins, attention will naturally turn towards the shape of the 2027 grid.

Mercedes are the highest-profile team yet to officially confirm their 2027 line-up. Team Principal Toto Wolff has indicated that the team “don’t want to change things”, but the absence of an official declaration means the situation remains one to watch.

Max Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028, yet he continues to be at the centre of speculation about his future. Fernando Alonso is another major focus. His current deal with Aston Martin expires at the end of this year, leaving open the question of whether he will continue with the team.

Several other driver pairings also remain unconfirmed beyond the current season. Williams, Racing Bulls, Haas and Audi have yet to officially announce their plans. Alpine, meanwhile, are still to confirm whether Franco Colapinto will remain alongside Pierre Gasly, who is set to stay with the team until at least the end of 2028.

The driver market is unlikely to be decided by one announcement alone. The uncertainty surrounding several teams means that one confirmed move could affect the options available elsewhere. For drivers, the second half of the season is therefore about more than points and results: it is also an opportunity to establish their value at a time when seats are being assessed.

A second half with every major thread still open

The first half of 2026 has created a compelling competitive structure without settling its biggest questions. Antonelli has the championship lead and a chance to rewrite the record books, but Mercedes face a development fight against Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

Aston Martin and Williams are looking for recovery through their upgrade programmes. Malaysia is returning to the calendar with the demanding Sepang circuit, while the driver market is set to intensify as teams consider their 2027 line-ups.

That combination gives the second half of the season a clear sense of consequence. The championship leader has momentum, the rivals have demonstrated winning pace, the midfield teams are chasing progress, and the future of several drivers remains unresolved. When Formula 1 returns from its summer break, the season will resume with far more than a title race still to play for.
