The 2026 FIA Formula 3 season reaches its climax in Madrid, where the newest venue on the calendar will host a finale with both championships still undecided. With three races available and the drivers facing the Madring for the first time in a race weekend, there is plenty at stake across the field.
The headline contest is the drivers’ title. Just 15 points separate Freddie Slater and Ugo Ugochukwu, setting up a decisive battle between the TRIDENT and Campos Racing drivers.
Slater has held the momentum in recent rounds. Since Silverstone, he has scored 55 points to Ugochukwu’s 22, while also taking pole positions at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza and finishing second in Budapest. Ugochukwu, meanwhile, was only inside the top 12 in Budapest and has had to fight through the field in Belgium and at Monza.
That recovery ability remains central to his hopes. The Campos driver has repeatedly worked his way forward and still has a realistic chance of overturning the deficit. He can also draw confidence from setting the fastest time in the Madrid test, although Slater was equally competitive, with both title contenders topping two sessions apiece. Their willingness to race wheel-to-wheel adds another layer to an already compelling showdown. The latest title-fight coverage sets the scene for the final confrontation.
Ugochukwu’s teammates Ernesto Rivera and Théophile Nael remain mathematical title contenders, although their routes to the championship are longshots. More immediately, both will be targeting a place on the championship podium.
The fight extends deep into the standings. Only 32 points separate Rivera in third from Mattia Colnaghi in 13th, while Alessandro Giusti in 20th is 53 points behind Rivera. That makes Madrid an important opportunity for almost every driver: one strong weekend could significantly reshape the final order and provide momentum heading into the winter.
Campos hold a 64-point advantage over TRIDENT and are on the brink of securing a second consecutive Teams’ Title. TRIDENT’s hopes of making major inroads were damaged at Monza after Matteo De Palo’s technical infringement and Slater’s Feature Race retirement caused by a mechanical issue.
TRIDENT still arrive with momentum, but Campos know that matching their season-long level could be enough to seal the championship.
The Madrid test offered an initial reference point, but a race weekend presents a different challenge. There will be two Qualifying sessions and two Feature Races, with the Sprint and Feature Race 1 both taking place on Saturday.
That creates additional pressure for drivers and teams, while also providing more chances to score heavily. For a first race weekend at the Madring, it is the final unknown in a season already built around a fiercely contested title fight.
