Hamilton leads the way in Silverstone FP1
The British Grand Prix weekend has kicked off in spectacular fashion, with home hero Lewis Hamilton setting the pace in the opening practice session at a sunny Silverstone. Now sporting the scarlet of Ferrari, Hamilton delivered a timely reminder of his prowess around this classic circuit, delighting the packed grandstands. However, the session hinted at another chapter in the intense rivalry with McLaren, as Lando Norris was hot on his heels, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling weekend.
Hamilton and Ferrari Lay Down an Early Marker
In a sight that will bring joy to the British fans, Lewis Hamilton topped the FP1 timesheets with a lap of 1:26.892s. It appears the new floor Ferrari introduced in Austria is continuing to pay dividends, as the SF-24 looked potent around the high-speed sweeps of Silverstone. Hamilton's time was just enough to edge out his fellow countryman, Lando Norris, by a mere 0.023 seconds, indicating the tight margins we can expect.
Ferrari's strong start was reinforced by Charles Leclerc, who secured fourth place, just two-tenths off his teammate. The early signs suggest that the Italian team has brought a car capable of challenging for the top step of the podium, combining their recent good form with Hamilton's unmatched record at this venue.
McLaren Right in the Mix, Red Bull on the Back Foot
McLaren continued their formidable form, looking like Ferrari's nearest challengers. Lando Norris, fresh off a victory in Austria, slotted into second place, while championship leader Oscar Piastri wasn't far behind in third, just 0.150s off the ultimate pace. Once again, Norris seemed to have a slight edge over his teammate, a trend that has developed in recent races.
In stark contrast, it was a challenging opening hour for Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen could only manage P10, over half a second adrift of Hamilton's benchmark. The Dutchman was audibly frustrated over the team radio, complaining that his car "doesn't turn." The team is testing a new floor on Verstappen's car only this weekend, indicating they have some data-gathering and setup work to do to unlock the RB20's potential. F2 talent Arvid Lindblad, making his FP1 debut in the other Red Bull, put in a tidy performance to finish 14th.
Copse Corner Proves Tricky
The fast, sweeping Turn 9, Copse, caught out several drivers during the session. The windy conditions appeared to be a significant factor, with Pierre Gasly, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Lance Stroll all losing the rear of their cars and spinning. Bortoleto's spin was particularly dramatic, sending him across the grass. This high-commitment corner will be one to watch for the remainder of the weekend, especially if the wind continues to play a role.
The Young Guns and Midfield Surprises
A host of young drivers took to the track in FP1, and it was Isack Hadjar in the Racing Bulls who impressed the most, finishing a superb sixth fastest. His teammate for the session, Liam Lawson, also showed strong pace to secure P8, suggesting the team's special Silverstone livery might have brought some extra performance.
Elsewhere, Williams ran an out-of-sync program, with both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon spending much of the session on the hard tyres before a late soft-tyre run for Albon put him seventh. They remain an unknown quantity. For Mercedes, George Russell finished a solid fifth, while rookie Kimi Antonelli had a clean session to end up ninth, further showcasing the Silver Arrows are firmly in the leading pack.
What to Expect Next
The first practice session has painted a fascinating picture. Ferrari and McLaren appear to be the teams to beat, with an incredibly tight gap between them. Red Bull has a significant amount of work ahead to resolve their balance issues and join the fight at the front. With Mercedes and a surprisingly quick Racing Bulls team also in the mix, the battle for the top spots looks wide open as we head into the rest of the British Grand Prix weekend.
