Mekies: Verstappen and Red Bull are an "inseparable entity"

Red Bull’s Verstappen dilemma

Laurent Mekies has described Max Verstappen and Red Bull as an “inseparable entity” as uncertainty continues to surround the four-time world champion’s future.

Red Bull’s leadership is working to retain its star driver until at least the end of his contract in 2028. However, Verstappen remains one of the most sought-after figures in Formula 1. Mercedes showed strong interest last year, while McLaren has emerged as the leading candidate in recent months. A concrete offer from McLaren has not yet been tabled, while an offer from Red Bull was reportedly rejected by sources close to Verstappen’s camp.

Mekies underlines Verstappen’s value

Despite the questions surrounding his future, Mekies made clear that Verstappen’s relationship with Red Bull remains exceptionally strong. Writing in a recent column for Auto Hebdo, the Red Bull chief presented the driver as far more than a source of outright speed.

“As I often say, Max is the best data sensor we have on the car,” Mekies wrote. He praised Verstappen’s relentless pursuit of performance, his understanding of the team’s complexity and his ability to communicate with different members of the organisation in a way that helps them perform at their best.

Mekies acknowledged that Verstappen’s extremely high standards can make collaboration difficult at times. Yet, in his view, those same standards are central to the bond between driver and team.

“It’s not just him and Red Bull Racing; they are an inseparable entity,” Mekies wrote. He added that Verstappen’s importance is easy to underestimate, describing him as an extraordinary driver and an even more extraordinary person.

For Red Bull, the message is unambiguous: retaining Verstappen is not simply about keeping a world-class driver. It is about preserving a relationship that Mekies believes sits at the heart of the entire team.
