Hamilton and Verstappen escape penalties after Dutch GP Sprint grid investigation

Stewards clear five drivers after grid procedure investigation

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were among five Formula 1 drivers to avoid penalties after a series of investigations during the Dutch GP Sprint at Zandvoort.

All five were found to have breached item 24 of Rui Marques’s notes. Each driver stopped before reaching Safety Car Line 1 on the way to the grid and, as a result, failed to reach the grid under their own power.

Crowded grid influenced stewards’ decision

The drivers were judged to have “acted appropriately” by stopping their cars in a safe position as close as possible to the grid. That finding recognised the practical difficulty of following the written procedure while avoiding an unsafe or obstructed situation in a congested area.

The decision allowed all five drivers to retain their Sprint results, avoiding a late change to the classification after the investigations were completed.

Sprint results remain unchanged

George Russell won the Dutch GP Sprint for Mercedes, while Verstappen finished sixth and Hamilton took seventh. The outcome therefore preserved the direct result between the two former champions, with Verstappen classified ahead of Hamilton.

Bottas finished 19th for Cadillac, while Stroll crossed the line 17th for Aston Martin. Tsunoda, making his F1 return with Racing Bulls, finished 13th. His return had been confirmed after Liam Lawson was called up to replace the injured Isack Hadjar at Red Bull.

The stewards’ ruling means the Dutch GP Sprint classification stands, with the grid procedure breach treated as understandable in the context of the crowded conditions rather than as an offence requiring sporting punishment.
