The Formula 1 grid for the Miami sprint race has been unexpectedly reduced to 21 cars following a dramatic mechanical failure for Nico Hulkenberg in the build-up to the event.
En route to the grid, Hulkenberg's car began emitting smoke, a situation that rapidly escalated when flames started billowing from the rear of the machine. The German driver was quickly forced to park the car and jump out, effectively ending his race before the formation lap had even begun.
Hulkenberg was scheduled to start from a promising 12th position on the grid. However, the severity of the fire now puts him in serious danger of missing the subsequent qualifying session if the required repairs are deemed too extensive by the team's mechanics.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Audi racing director Allan McNish revealed that the team had actually spotted an anomaly before the car had even left the garage.
"We had something in the garage which we thought was sorted out, but clearly there was a problem going to the grid," McNish explained. "We need to get the car back to have a look at it."
When pressed on whether there are fears Hulkenberg could miss qualifying, McNish remained cautious: "We need to get it back before we can really see."
The incident adds another layer of complexity to the weekend, especially considering the upgrades, rule tweaks, and a new F1 pecking order that teams are navigating at the Miami Grand Prix. Furthermore, with heavy thunderstorms threatening to disrupt the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, the pressure is on the Audi garage to resolve the issue swiftly.
