Oscar Piastri stunned the Zandvoort crowd by snatching pole position for the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, edging out McLaren teammate Lando Norris by just 0.012 seconds in a tense and unpredictable qualifying session. The Australian’s lap of 1:08.662 not only secured his first pole since Spain but also broke Norris’ stranglehold on the weekend after the Briton had topped all three practice sessions.
McLaren’s pace was evident from the outset, but the intra-team battle was fierce. Norris had been the benchmark through practice and much of qualifying, particularly in the middle sector, but Piastri pieced together a near-perfect lap in Q3 — fastest in sectors one and three — to overturn the deficit.
The result marks McLaren’s first front-row lockout at Zandvoort and continues their strong form in 2025. History is on Piastri’s side too: in all four previous Dutch GPs since the race’s return, the pole-sitter has gone on to win.
Home hero Max Verstappen could only manage third, 0.263s off Piastri’s time, as the RB21 struggled to match McLaren’s outright pace. The Dutchman will start alongside an impressive Isack Hadjar, who delivered a career-best fourth for Racing Bulls.
However, Verstappen’s afternoon isn’t over — he faces a post-session investigation for allegedly failing to follow the race director’s maximum delta time instructions in Q3. Any penalty could have major implications for his home race hopes.
George Russell secured fifth for Mercedes, ahead of Charles Leclerc in sixth. Ferrari’s qualifying was a mixed bag, with both Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton (seventh) struggling for consistency and grip.
Hadjar’s teammate Liam Lawson impressed with eighth, splitting the Ferraris of Hamilton and Carlos Sainz (ninth). Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10 for Aston Martin, unable to replicate the team’s strong Friday pace.
Kimi Antonelli narrowly missed out on Q3 in 11th, joined on the sidelines by Yuki Tsunoda, Gabriel Bortoleto, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon. Gasly also faces a stewards’ investigation for a similar delta time infringement in Q2.
Q1 saw early exits for Franco Colapinto, Nico Hülkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman, and Lance Stroll — the latter crashing after dipping a wheel onto the grass, forcing his Aston Martin into the barriers.
With the front row separated by just 0.012s and potential rain in the mix, the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix is set for a thrilling showdown between McLaren’s rising star and their in-form team leader — with Verstappen lurking, ready to spoil the party.
Tomorrow’s race could be decided in the first few corners — or by the skies above Zandvoort.
