Jolyon Palmer believes George Russell has the mental edge required to prevail in a potential intra-team title fight with Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, arguing that a harder, more uncompromising side of Russell could yet define their dynamic.
Both drivers are currently level on grand prix victories following the Japanese Grand Prix, where Antonelli became the youngest championship leader in the history of the sport. With Mercedes proving highly competitive and both drivers delivering results, they are already being tipped as favourites for the 2026 championship.
Against that backdrop, the prospect of a fierce internal rivalry is beginning to surface.
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast alongside James Hinchcliffe and Tom Clarkson, Palmer was asked whether 2026 could produce a Nico Rosberg versus Lewis Hamilton-style battle at Mercedes.
"I do think George still has the upper hand," Palmer said.
He pushed back against any suggestion that Russell lacks the ruthlessness often required in a title fight.
"I disagree with George not having that level of Rosberg Hamilton in him. I've seen George race from the junior formula, and I know that that guy has got steeliness that if he's under pressure and there's a title at play, I think he definitely has it in him to give it everything and come out on top."
Palmer suggested that Russell’s competitive instincts would surface if a championship were at stake — even if that meant a more uncompromising approach toward his own team-mate.
"I don't think he'll necessarily play nicey-nice with Kimi the whole way. So then it depends on what Kimi's like and we haven't seen enough of that yet, have we?"
The implication is clear: Russell may be prepared to escalate if circumstances demand it.
Hinchcliffe agreed that Russell possesses the necessary edge — but questioned whether Antonelli is ready, either competitively or temperamentally, to engage in that kind of internal fight.
"So I agree with you on George. But it takes two to tango, and I don't think that Kimi, I don't think at 19, still in his second year, still very much under the microscope, I'd be shocked if he believes that he can jump up there."
He went further, casting doubt on whether Antonelli has shown the same combative traits Russell displayed in his junior career.
"I don't even know if he has it in him as a human. He seems like the nicest kid. I haven't seen some of those things that you saw out of George in the junior formula, but even if it's there, in the situation that he's in, trying to attack George Russell within the team, it seems a bit risky. I just don't think he's got it in him. I think those two are different personalities."
For now, Russell and Antonelli are delivering in equal measure, sharing grand prix wins and benefitting from a potent Mercedes package. But as expectations rise toward 2026, the psychological dimension of their partnership is coming into sharper focus.
Palmer’s view is that if a title fight materialises, Russell’s “steeliness” could become decisive. Whether Antonelli reveals a similarly hard edge — or maintains a contrasting approach — remains an open question.
What is clear is that, should both continue on their current trajectory, Mercedes may soon face the kind of internal tension that defines championship eras.
